A 46-year-old man of no fixed address will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Thursday, June 30)on a series of charges after his arrest in a carpark of the Royal Military College in Duntroon yesterday afternoon.
The man was found by police slumped over the steering wheel of a stolen BMW M5 sedan. When asked to step out of the vehicle, he resisted arrest and attempted to punch a police officer, after which he was handcuffed and taken into custody.
Late yesterday (Wednesday, June 29) afternoon, members of the public contacted ACT Policing Operations reporting a BMW M5 sedan travelling south toward Canberra at high speed and driving erratically on the Barton Highway.
There were further reports of the same vehicle driving erratically on Morshead Drive, where the BMW had driven over a roundabout and sustained two flat tyres.
The black BMW was found to be stolen from New South Wales. Subsequent police enquiries revealed that the man is wanted on four First Instance Warrants in South Australia. It is alleged that he was involved in an aggravated burglary in Preston, Victoria, in which he and an accomplice stole a BMW X5 4WD.
The offender has allegedly committed another aggravated burglary in Gol Gol, New South Wales, on Tuesday June 28 in which he has stolen the M5.
The offender will be charged with a series of offences including ride/drive in a stolen motor vehicle, unlawful possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, assaulting a Commonwealth Public Official and traffic offences.
Anyone who may be able to assist police with this investigation is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
