This in from Territory and Municipal Services:

Canberra residents are urged to exercise caution, particularly on rural roads, due to the wet weather and snow. Bendora Road and Mt Franklin Road from Piccadilly Circus have both been closed for safety reasons, with other roads likely to close.

Residents wanting to experience the snow first-hand are strongly encouraged to consider visiting an established snow recreation area, such as Corin Forest, rather than informal areas accessed by Brindabella Road and Boboyan Road.

UPDATE 17/08/12 15:12: And now more:

Motorists are advised that several rural roads have been closed due to the wet weather and snow.

Bendora Road, Boboyan Road, Brindabella Road, Mt Franklin Road from Piccadilly Circus and Corin Road at Woods Reserve have been closed for safety reasons, with other roads likely to close.

The closures means there is currently no access to Corin Forest mountain recreation area. This will be re-assessed tomorrow.

It’s a bit like speed limits, they have to be “dumbed down” for the worst driver in the worst car in the worst conditions.

If that was true, noone would be able to leave their driveway, since the very worst drivers shouldn’t.

Please explain why you have this irrational and deeply ingrained opposition to 4wd vehicles?
I bought mine so I can see more of this beautiful country and go off the beaten track.

You mean you didn’t buy it in order to drive “off-road” onto nature-strips outside sporting events and school fetes?

You’re definitely in a bit of a minority there.

sorry but you have no credibility because you don’t know me, and yet you seem to have the “ability” to characterise me as ignorant and a 4wd hooligan..

You demonstrated you have no understanding of the damage that you do to unsealed roads in the wet, which is why I have provided links to several government authorities who spell it out in order to present you with a learning opportunity.
So far, you don’t seem to have chosen to benefit from the learning opportunity offered to you and seem set on being argumentative and defensive.

I don’t need to read websites to learn. I have practical experience of driving on unsealed roads without causing damage.

I’m also not being argumentative and have every right to be defensive when you try to define my character in a negative manner.

Maybe the govt hast to go the lowest common denominator and close the roads to all traffic because they (the govt) have trouble distinguishing the sensible and experienced 4WDers from the inexperienced ratbag 4WDers.

It’s a bit like speed limits, they have to be “dumbed down” for the worst driver in the worst car in the worst conditions. The speed limit is the same if you are Fast Freddy P-plater driving a V8 Commodore, Grandpa Joe driving his 1965 HR Holden or The Stig driving a 2012 model top-of-the-range BMW that has more safety features than you can poke a stick at.

Whatever the deeply held belief Henry has for his opinion, you can bet that it directly conflicts with another of his deeply held beliefs.

He really is a study in contradictions!

Why do responsible non yahoo 4WD enthusiasts have to miss out?

Even if he does exist, we’re not going to keep the roads open just for his benefit, when there are thousands of 4WDriving road vandals lining up to damage our roads in the wet.

+1

and this is precisely why we had one, and will likely get another one in the future

nanny state or what!?! why not just erect signs that advise dangerous conditions ahead.

next they will be closing all roads if they are wet.

You obviously know nothing about unsealed roads, here or in Europe.

As a ratepayer, I am happy that the responsible authorities close these roads in the wet to prevent them being damaged by irresponsible yahoos in 4WDs, just as responsible authorities do the world over to protect unsealed roads.

sorry to disappoint you, but I do know about unsealed roads…..been on a few of them in my time here in Canberra….

Being ignorant of unsealed roads is not as bad is being ignorant and denying it. People like *you* are the precise reason these roads are closed.

congratulations, you quote a few weblinks and present yourself as an expert.

sorry but you have no credibility because you don’t know me, and yet you seem to have the “ability” to characterise me as ignorant and a 4wd hooligan.

why not go all the way and call me a hoon too because I own a white commodore and a silver V8 commodore!?!

please keep your ridiculous opinions to yourself.

Ok, but the Corin Rd *is* sealed. All the way to the end. So that isn’t why it is closed. Is the snow to deep for cars to get through? What is I take my chains?

It is perfectly normal for unsealed roads to be closed to prevent idiots damaging them whilst wet:

http://www.visitmungo.com.au/getting-there

All routes involve two-wheel-drive unsealed roads which may be closed during and after wet weather. Even if you get through during wet weather, to preserve the park’s roads, access may be closed to the Walls of China or any unsealed roads inside the Park.

http://www.wentworth.nsw.gov.au/services/RoadClosures.php

Persons driving on closed roads will be subject to fines and may be charged for any works necessary to rectify damage

http://www.bourke.nsw.gov.au/images/engineering/roadreport/rr160812.pdf

MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED ALL UNSEALED ROADS ARE CLOSED WHEN WET
FOR FURTHER ENQUIRIES PLEASE CONTACT 02 6830 8000 OR A/H 0419722055
Note: Council wastes valuable resources repairing damage done by vehicles using closed or
wet roads. Offenders may be prosecuted and be held responsible to pay for any damage
caused.

http://www.cobar.nsw.gov.au/engineering/roads

Cobar Shire Council appeals to all drivers planning to travel within the Cobar Shire area to assist in preventing damage to the unsealed roads by choosing an alternative route or waiting until drier conditions prevail when wet weather occurs. Flagrant and irresponsible disregard for this appeal could lead to prosecution to the full extent of the law.

I think the JURY is out on that one…

The roads need to be closed because people drive like spastics.

ahhh 10cm of snow (they had) is 10mm of rain.

and they don’t close the roads when they get 10mm of rain do they !

difference ?

Absolutely chockers at 1.30 cars lined up both sides all the way to the dam gate (which was closed) from before the recreation area! As we were leaving passed maybe 20-30 cars going up very busy arvo up there!

Highly recommend tidbinbilla to see snow quite a few families were making mini snowmen & having snowball fights this morning.

Still closed at 12.00pm; they said it might be open in the afternoon.

Corin Forest Road was still closed well before the (so called) Recreation Area this morning (Sat) at 9.30am.

So, they give us an official snow recreation area but close access to it when we actually get snow?

Corin Forest is a dump and a waste of your time. They get little patches of grey snow if that.

Will they actually say when they re-open the road to Corin Forest? Do they do media releases on weekends or do we just take a guess that they have reopened it and drive on up there anyway?

As Jethro said: what’s the point of having a snow recreation area if they don’t let us access it when there’s snow???!

What complete BS. A snow flake fell, so what?

ACT rangers would be a complete laughing stock in Europe.

So would ACT drivers.

yes, it may come as a surprise to ACT rangers and pollies that major world cities get regular dumps of snow- like ‘DC or any canadian city and they dont shut the city down. It is typical of the never-been outside-the ACT mentality of career public servants.

If people drove to the conditions and didn’t act like idiots then they’d probably have the roads open. The family of the next commodore owner who wraps himself around a tree will ask why the government didn’t step in to stop their son from crashing in the icy conditions.
