I just don’t understand why build so many bike paths then close roads for a bike ride or indeed a run? Are they saying the paths are rubbish?

Well you can’t fit 12 riders/runners abreast on a bike path, for starters…

Gungsuperstar’s final sentence at #12 is well put, but my point was not about disruption to my life, but about the arrogance of power, and the ham-fisted manner in which it is all too often exercised in this town.

BLOODY CYCLISTS!!!

Of course, why should we inconvenience the couple of dozen Canberrans who actually venture out in cars on weekends to accommodate, encourage and even promote the social side of physical activity?

Never have a I lived in a city that gets it’s back up to such a ridiculous extent over the notion that roads actually belong to tax payers, not to cars. It’s a couple of days a year, and it should be encouraged, not bitched about.

This would be a much nicer place to live if people had a semblance of community, rather than the first question they ask in response to anything being “how will this negatively affect me?”

I just don’t understand why build so many bike paths then close roads for a bike ride or indeed a run? Are they saying the paths are rubbish?

As for the list of closures, would it be easier if they just told us what is still open?

What a complete and utter dog’s breakfast. The alacrity with which public space in this town is sequestered for the purposes of righteous minorities never ceases to amaze me. Reasonable enough – given the raison d’etre of our fair city – when it’s a reasonably well organised group wanting to make their views on an important issue known to politicians, and others who might see the resultant media coverage. As for the rest, including this jamboree, I hope that the profits for the motels, bars, restaurants and knocking shops, justify the disruption, and the cost to government of organising it.

talking of righteous

diddums. Will your morning latte be disrupted?

As it happens, I don’t drink lattes and don’t live near the affected areas – so, of course, I am not really entitled to an opinion on this, and should just shut-up, keep paying my rates and taxes etc. etc., and leave it to the people who know best – runners, football fanciers etc., and the politicians who pander to them, to do as they wish with this city.

Didn’t they just have a running festival at Stromlo a week or two ago? These runners are getting as bad as cyclists. Why should the rest of the world be f#%ked up the arse (with no lube), just to accommodate them?

Runners use lube.

Otherwise chafing.

You could ask to borrow some.

My suggestion would be that if you need to drive anywhere in the area, you take the suggestion of the release and call Canberra Connect beforehand.

‘Hi – I’m planning to drive into the Kingston Markets this Sunday. I’ll be coming from Belconnen, so normally would drive down Parkes Way, over Kings Avenue Bridge, and then down Bowen Drive and Wentworth Avenue. Should I go this way, or plan an alternative route? We might head into Manuka for lunch afterwards too – what would be the best route to take to get there?’

Enough calls like this, and I’m sure it wouldn’t take too long before TAMS provided info like this in something other than a wall of text. What they’ve got available at the moment is a bad joke.

I agree with you madscientist. What a mess. The original post itself could do with improving too. Whilst well-intentioned, there is no “special events road closures” page on the TAMS home page
Main TAMS page, as quoted
Then either to a new page “Roads and Transport” and on from there OR bottom of page to the heading “Roads and Transport” and choose “Road Closures”
Then “Special Events”
Or you could have given the correct link in the first place?
http://www.tams.act.gov.au/roads-transport/act_public_road_closures/listings/special_events

And if you wanted to look at the list of closures for your suburb using your browser find option? You won’t find Acton in the list at all. I couldn’t be bothered checking if the other suburbs listed in the heading are also missing – perhaps someone else has time. Your bad TAMS.
