Roads budget helping out the Cotter Dam expansion

Chief Minister Stanhope is triumphantly announcing a $2 million upgrade of the Cotter Road out of the $200 million road upgrades budget for this financial year.

So what’s being done? Well this bit gets interesting:

“This upgrade to a two-kilometre stretch of pavement of the Cotter Road will provide motorists with a smoother and safer road that will be better able to resist the loads from trucks carrying materials to the new Cotter Dam,” Mr Stanhope said.

Surely the Cotter Dam expansion budget should be paying for this then?

If people knew the true costs of driving they woud be horrified.

Given most of these people already have cars I dare say they wouldn’t be. That’s to say, you may have a very good point if you elaborate on it, but just don’t expect the majority it could affect to care.

And last night Hargreaves and Brodtman were on WIN talking up a 20 million spend on Monaro Hwy, upgrading a 1 km section. 20 mill for 1 km – and Hargreaves whinges about the expense of light rail.

This 200 million is just for ‘road upgrades’ and not new roads, or infinite GDE upgrading.

If people knew the true costs of driving they woud be horrified.

Yep, I’m kidding, just gotta love those potholes and gutters from heavy trucks, does wonders for your car/motorcycle/bicycle….

Must have gone bad since last weekend then, because while not perfect, Cotter Rd is in much better condition then Uriarra Rd, Coppins Crossing Rd, Paddy’s River Rd, or any of the other roads in the area.

speaking of the roads budget, exactly when is the flood damage to the coppins crossing bridge going to be repaired?…..whilst the plastic barriers and temporary light towers that are in place now are not really dangerous they are quite the eyesore…….particularly with the remnants of the old lights and roadside barriers still strewn all over the river alongside the bridge……it has been several months now ffs

Yep, I’m kidding, just gotta love those potholes and gutters from heavy trucks, does wonders for your car/motorcycle/bicycle. And there is nothing like the feeling when coming around a corner, your wheels are stuck in a truck wheel rut and there is a pothole bigger than a wombat burrow in the middle of it and a truck overtaking a truck coming straight for you, brilliant bloody brilliant.

OMFG!!! Some of that budget could have gone to upgrading Officer Crescent in Ainslie. That road is in desperate need of a overhaul, and has more traffic on it that the Cotter Road ever would!!!

Wow, we should feel privileged, $2m out of our pockets and only 2klm to be upgraded. What about the rest of it? Who is going to fix the rest of it? This used to be one of the best riding/driving/cycling roads in Australia, now it is crap, way to go actgovco.

Umm, you are kidding right? Cotter Road is much better now then it was five years ago. The section of Brindabella Road from Cotter over to Mountain Creek Rd is pretty good, but it always wears out fast on account of the fun corners and fast cars/bikes.

The only road I have been finding bad out there lately is from Cotter south to Tharwa. While generally OK, there are a couple of monster potholes, which scared the crap out of me on the bike, and claimed a tyre on a friends car last weekend.

Now they just duplicate the 8am parking lot between the Parkway and Adelaide Ave. Not only would the cyclists be happy, but the motorist also.

The Cotter/Tidbinbilla loop is one of a small few decent driving roads in the ACT, and I applaud any measures to improve it for the benefit of both drivers and cyclists.

Must be one of the few bits of Cotter Rd left that hasn’t been upgraded in recent years. It is a pretty nice ride now.

The safety of cyclists who regularly ride the Uriarra-Cotter-Stromlo loop (mostly of a weekend) has been significantly improved by the work that has already been done. A mix of bicycles, fast motorbikes and 4WDs has the potential to be dangerous: the widening has made things considerably safer and I look forward to the work being complete.

We’ll just smooth it over and pay the $2mil rather than have another cost blowout and bad publicity for ACTEW.

Surely the Cotter Dam expansion budget should be paying for this then?

Perhaps? Technically? Does it really matter that much? It all comes out of the same pile in the end. Its not like it ceases to be useful as a road once the dam expansion is complete. And if the road needed resurfacing regardless, then surely the bonus of being able to better handle big trucks is just that – a bonus.
