Roadside water signs to go

Roadside Signage

Having gone through summer with the dams at 100% Actew have announced that they’re getting rid of the roadside nag signage on water use.

After more than three years of Canberra commuters seeing daily dam level and water consumption information, the electronic variable water signs will disappear from local roads at the end of this week.

ACTEW Managing Director Mark Sullivan said the signs were installed on five major arterial roads across Canberra in response to the most significant, serious period of water scarcity ever experienced by our region. Due to the recent improvement in the water situation the signs will now be removed but will return if needed in future.

Mr Sullivan said: “The signs were initiated in 2007 when combined dam levels were at record low levels and Stage 4 water restrictions were imminent.

“Community interest in the region’s water situation was extremely high, with a need for people to be updated regularly, so ACTEW partnered with the ACT Government to install the signs and give daily information on how our dam levels were faring and how much water we were using.

Any bets on how long until they’re back?

I didn’t say that. Other people might “cry” (as you so ignorantly put it) about getting speeding fines — but I don’t. I just think it is a bit rude to put up signs saying “SPEED LIMITS ENFORCED” everywhere.

Excuse my ignorance. I should have stated that you bleat about speeding fines.

……….Nah it’s not just you. I get bored of all kinds of signs I see all the time year after year: stop signs, give way signs etc. Best to just ignore them.

Oh ha ha ha Tooks, very funny.

The difference between the signs you refer to and the electronic message I refer to is, the stop, give way etc. signs are necessary whereas the electronic message reminding us all of the constant threat of getting a speeding ticket are unnecessary.

Thank you, thank you. Jerry Seinfeld, look out.

Maybe they could change them to keep a running tally on the $$$ spent on self promotion and how that will increase water/electricity costs.

The public would find that much more usefull.

Is it me or has anyone else noticed one of these signs threatening everyone with “SPEED LIMITS ENFORCED” every minute of every hour of every day for the past how long…..2 years?

It’s been sitting on the median strip of Parkes Way at the foot of Black Mountain, just east of the Glenloch Interchange.

Is it just me or is anyone else bored with this sign??

Even with all the rain we’ve had lately, he’s still pouring as much water as possible on his lawn and garden. I’m surprised that he hasn’t created his own little Passchendaele in his backyard; where people sink without a trace into the ooze.

He might be growing rice for the coming food shortages.

There are too many signs, have a look on your way home, all the various road signs (you get lines of speed change signs, you can see them), info signs, angry signs about not doing this or that… and then these flashing signs.

#6 +1

Can the over the road signs play movies, just so we have something to do while waiting in the traffic delays due to the constant roadworks.

It would save us more money if ACTEW would cease their banal, misleading and useless TV adverts.

Not long – if my neighbour is anything to go by. Even with all the rain we’ve had lately, he’s still pouring as much water as possible on his lawn and garden. I’m surprised that he hasn’t created his own little Passchendaele in his backyard; where people sink without a trace into the ooze.

Maybe he’s worried that the dams will fail with all that water behind them, and he’s just trying to help out a bit?

they should now be replaced with a fixed sign saying something like “save water now and pay for it later through higher water rates and dodgy Government deals where we have to buy back our own water and get punished for saving”.

With the removal of the portable signs, how about putting the water usage info on the fancy new permanent over-the-road one on the northbound stretch of the Parkway between Sulwood and Hindmarsh when that’s not being used (which so far seems to be 99% of the time)

How about we just give it a miss. The need for the info on such public display is not needed, those that want it should go to ACTEW’s website.
