Roadsign Recursion on Gundaroo Drive

johnboy 15 September 2012 21

Monsieur Aubergine has sent in this particularly striking piece of brainlessness by our lords and masters:

This signage (photographed last weekend) is on both sides of the pedestrian underpass near Crace. Surely the signmaker would have wondered if something wasn’t quite right…?

Once they start how do they stop?

Doctor, doctor, give me the news.
I’ve got a bad case of Gundaroo.

… I’ll show myself out now.

Maybe it’s meant to be Gundaroo Doctor Drive??

Although you all seem to think there is an error with this sign, it is in fact part of the ACT Govt’s commitment to upholding the recently signed UN convention on the rights of stutterers and stammerers.

My favourite in brissy was Rode Road. The locals would get shitty if you pronounced it ‘road road’ instead of ‘rodey rode’….so I always did.

The name Gundaroo Drive is a farce. The road doesn’t even go to Gundaroo.

Yeah, not to mention Duffy Street in Ainslie, which doesn’t go anywhere near Duffy.
As for Tasmania Circle, in Forrest – I mean, come on, how silly do they think we are?

I noticed some years ago that where a name is both a street and a suburb in this town, that street is rarely in (or goes to) that suburb. Still find it odd.

As opposed to those sort of roads which are named after the places. You can see the intention of Gundaroo Drive was to indicate that Gundaroo would be in the general direction of where the road is leading to. However, Gundaroo Drive doesn’t link up with Gundaroo Road.

Not so odd after all. In the majority of cases these streets were named when Canberra was much smaller and the planners thought something should be named after that person. As Canberra expanded and new suburbs were created it was thought that a suburb should be named after that person if they were deemed important enough.

As for Gundaroo Drive, it is roughly where the old Gundaroo Rd was so the old “Road” suffix was replaced with Drive in line with Canberra developmental tradition, the suffix “Road” fell out of favour with the planners very early in the piece. Same with Tharwa Road/Tharwa Drive.

Interestingly though, Flemington Road has managed to keep its old semi-rural name despite now being the major arterial bringing cars from North Canberra into Gungahlin.

Also, there would be a lot of people getting lost on the way to Gundaroo, as according to Google Street View, there is no road signage to show that drivers must turn left at the end of Gundaroo Drive on the way to Gundaroo, as it would seem the original path towards Gundaroo has been deviated. The authorities should provide adequate signs pointing to Gundaroo under the circumstances.

It seems to work for Smith Street Motorway on the Gold Coast too.

You really do have a bee in your bonnet. Are you overestimating the number of people actually wanting to visit Gundaroo?
The last time I went (on my way to much more cosmopolitan Gunning) it was not exactly bumper to bumper on that road…

You can’t get to Gunning without knowing how to get to Gundaroo first.

Over the course of a lifetime, there would be a lot of traffic in total. It’s a major rural byway which extends across the border into other townships. It would seem to be a public requirement to have signposts to show which roads lead to other towns. For example, if fire fighters from out of town needed to get to these places urgently in a severe disaster, it would help for there to be appropriate road signage.

It seems that the urban development of the Gungahlin area has resulted in unmarked deviations required to proceed northwards on to Gundaroo. Given the lack of daily traffic, it still seems inadequate to not have appropriate signage.
