Robbing the Hackett IGA a day after asking the checkout to help is not a winning move

Justice Burns has shared this thoughts on the sentencing of one AC which contains this surprising passage:

Some time on 8 March 3012, a silver Subaru Impreza was taken without its owner’s authority from an address in Ainslie. At about 6 pm that day you were a passenger in that vehicle when it was driven by your co-offender to the Hackett shops. You were both wearing masks and gloves. You entered the IGA Supermarket carrying a .303 British Calibre Bolt-Action Repeating Rifle with a magazine inserted in the magazine well.

Your co-offender was carrying a green-coloured recyclable shopping bag. You both yelled at staff and customers in a threatening manner demanding money. Witnesses described one or both of you yelling “give us all your fucking money”, “give us your money cunt”, “open up the till, we are not joking” and “do you think we are joking this is a hold-up?”

There were four staff members working in the store at that time, three of them at the checkout, and at least six customers. Amongst the customers were a mother and her 6-year-old daughter who were at the checkout at the time that you and your co-offender entered into the supermarket.

One of the staff on the checkout had been to school with you and recognised your voice, in addition you had only the day before raised with him at a chance meeting the proposition of robbing the supermarket while he was at the checkout. He did not agree with this proposal.

You continued to threaten the staff of the store whilst they placed money in the green bag carried by your co-offender. A sum of $1,300.30 was taken. You both left the store and returned to the Subaru. At the Subaru you aimed the rifle over the top of the car at three people sitting on the opposite side of the car park and yelled “Don’t look or I’ll fucking kill you”. You got in the car and your co-offender also got in the car and your co-offender then drove off.

Nice that they used a recycled bag. And a bolt action 303 with a magazine sounds like a nice bit of shooter.

I console myself with the thought that if they had any more brains they’d be more dangerous.

My brother was the one who he approached about being an inside man. I’m very proud to say he is growing into a decent and honest young man, despite the influences of some of his peers, as his actions in helping the police apprehend these young d-heads demonstrate. I’ll certainly be making sure he’s alright once they let these ferals back out.

Good for you mate! And him.

12 months? Good.

I hope the father of the little girl, and any other male relatives of those threatened by these sub-humans, are well aware of their names and their release dates.

While the SMLE is indeed an unwieldy beast at close quarters, not exactly fit to use in a holdup (unless you had fixed bayonets) it would scare the pants off the average punter. His Judgliness didn’t mention whether it was loaded or not, just that it had a magazine. Ammunition may have proved too cost prohibitive, last time I bought factory rounds for the three-ought they were $30 for 20.

Two numpties off the street for some (short) time is a ok outcome though.

Strange that the judge would bother suppressing his identity when a simple google of Hackett IGA robbery finds a young man with those initials, including a report on the day of the sentencing. That suppression order worked well then. I won’t name him so johnboy doesn’t get in trouble.

Perhaps Justice Burns is unfamiliar with the wonders of the internet.

I thought they’d need a DeLorean to rob it in 3012…

The legal system in this town has gone to hell in a fkg hand-basket.

I agree with everything Mike says here. That rifle was a ridiculous choice of weapon for a robbery, but a .303 at close range will blow a hole in a human body that you could shove your fist through. This could’ve ended very badly indeed, and my heart really does go out to that poor woman with her little daughter there.

I go to great effort and expense to keep my firearms safe and secure, and the penalties for failing to do so are quite severe, but these maniacs can threaten people with a gun during a robbery and then get massaged with a lettuce leaf, the bloody dogs.

Convoys of handbaskets are indeed travelling hellwards.

Ah business as usual in the ACT courts another lenient sentence nothing much to see here apart from the very colourful language and monumental stupidity!

The legal system in this town has gone to hell in a fkg hand-basket. Twelve months non-parole??? In any jurisdiction serious about gun crime that wouldn’t have been an adequate sentence just for possessing the firearm. But for pointing it at a six year old child? The trauma that poor mother must have felt. Then again at some bystanders (an act which served no other purpose than to make these grubs feel tough)? Justice Burns, you have let the law, the community and all of these victims down. This little prick will be on the streets again in one year providing he keeps off the booze whilst in custody. Being too stupid to plan a crime well should not get you a discount. I’m not looking forward to writing the I told you so post after he shoots someone on his next bender.

The .303 SMLE is indeed a legendary firearm, but it wouldn’t be my first choice of shooter for a grocery store holdup, not that I’d ever contemplate such a thing. The SMLE was designed for providing high volumes of aimed fire at long range into masses of advancing infantry, so they are extremely long, heavy, cumbersome, hard to conceal and very difficult to use effectively without a lot of training. They do make a very effective club, though.

I reckon that the choice of such a firearm for this evolution is just another indicator that their IQ’s and their rifle calibre are pretty much the same. And as for robbing the place the day after they put their plan to the cashier? Well, some people are dangerous simply because of their stupidity, and these tools obviously fit into that category, so I hope they’re off the streets for a while.

do you think we are joking this is a hold-up?”

In hindsight, YES. It’ll make for a great comedy skit.

Oh boy – are they ever in for a finger-wagging!

“give us your money c*nt”

The lack of a comma provides the imagination with a great range of images and possible rap lyrics.
