ROC loses the international leg

If Jeremy Clarkson has taught use anything, it’s that rallying is the dull pastime of dull people, or “the terminally gormless” as he more colourfully put it.

So for many it will be with some relief that we read in the Canberra Times that Canberra has “lost” our leg of the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

Lack of Government funding is blamed and the Liberals are saying it’s proof that Labor is agin motorsport.

Its been on its last legs for years.

Bring it back to a leg of the ARC, NSW and ACT State Titles. Have 100 entrants in cars as diverse at the latest STi and Evo’s to 40 year old Escorts and Datsuns, run it the traditional forests at the Cotter, Tidbinbilla and Blewitts and along the pipeline, have a couple of free spectator points in accessable locations and see how many people turn up.

It’s a shame that we have lost the APRC side of things, but I agree with giving some free spectator points like they did on the friday night in 2007. There was much more people out there that freezing friday night, than there was out in Kowen this year when we were competing

peterh, you’re dead right. Victor Bray in full flight was a sensation that every human should experience at least once in their life, even on the 1/8 mile at Fairbairn. Same as the V8s. I always loved watching Radisich and Murphy (both left-foot brakers) coming around the esses near Parliament House.

I never got into rallying, but the speedway at Fraser many years ago was also something special. I do remember the Millen Brothers at rallying, especially Rod, when I was young. They are now big in the US as “sliders”. Thumper might also remember these blokes.

We’re all the losers for another motorsport event vacatinng the ACT calender.

Apologies – Rally of Canberra.

By losing the international aspect of the event, the organisers should save a ton of money on the licencing fee with the FIA which can hopefully be reinvested into making the event thrive again.

as long as this doesn’t drive away the corporate sponsors, no pun intended…

I reckon rallying is the purest form of motorsport.

nothing like watching a grunty subaru in full power slide around a corner,

You still see that, only the buggers are on public roads and using their fog lights!

Clarkson is a twunt, an authority on very little, and should go back to selling teddy bears.
And he’s apparently ‘taught use’ all a lesson about rallying.

Johnboy is hiding his tongue-in-cheek social comment in his copy again…

Well done ACT Government! Shame they propped it up for as long as they did.

The Liberals irk me when they come out with crap like their current stance. The ACT Government didn’t kill the rally, a complete lack of sustainable and profitable interest killed it. That’s sad but there is no point throwing good money after bad when we have so many things of much greater importance that the Government SHOULD be looking after.

nothing like watching a grunty subaru in full power slide around a corner, spraying you with dirt and dust.

then again, there was nothing like watching:

v8 supercar fanging around the track

totally awesome drag car doing a burnout near fairbairn

sigh.

what is on at the national gallery?

seems to be about as much fun as we can get…

This is has been dying for years. In my view the Government should be congratulated for propping it up for so long. it’s been the lack of public and corporate support that have killed it.

going out on a practice lap with a rally driver on Kramer’s bucks day was awsome fun. true I don’t think it makes for a great spectator sport and tv coverage doesn’t capture the true fun of it but losing this sucks big time.

And for all clarkson’s wit he has his head up his posterior as often as not.

My fiance is not dull OR terminally gormless!!!!!!
