Two men were taken to hospital for medical treatment following a rock throwing incident early this morning (Friday, October 7).

About 4 am, police responded to a report of a rock being thrown through the front passenger window of a taxi on Belconnen Way, at the intersection with Macarthur Avenue in O’Connor, injuring two of the passengers.

A 20-year-old Palmerston man required glass to be removed from under his eyelid and a 19-year-old Hawker man received a laceration to his lip, requiring stitching.

Police spoke with three males at the location who are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity on Belconnen Way before 4 am this morning and may be able to assist police with the investigation is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

So there – these mindless morons are just poor, disconnected, misunderstood things that deserve only our sympathy, not condemnation for being Massey-like thugs.

[Sniff]That was beautiful.

I think it should be read out at their hanging.

It must be so empowering never to have f**ked up in life. Never to have hurt or adversely affected another living being in your pursuit of happiness. How does it feel to shit roses? Will you have that as your epitaph? “Here lies “insert perfect citizens name” who never f*&%ed up ever….not once….not one little smidge….honest mate (and when I did, I just didn’t get caught ;))

I understand that you have a deep empathy for people, but please realise that when scumbags do things like this which are deliberate and malicious, the community is understandably angry and wants the culprits brought to justice. This is not a f**k-up, this is a deliberate act designed to damage people and property.

I have not condoned this incident at all. I also do not condone hypocrisy.

So what exactly is your point?

My point is that I have not said throwing rocks at cars is OK. Of course it is a dangerous and potentially deadly or disabling thing to do. I have not said there shouldn’t be consequences for the people who did it. However, I do not support the “hanging mentality” so often displayed on RiotAct. I am sure everyone has done at least one risky thing, either deliberately or unknowingly, in their lifetimes that possibly harmed another (unless they have skipped some of the phases of human development- which would explain the lack of insight actually). I am also certain they would not condone the “hanging” of a loved one – which IMO would make them hypocrites.

Thanks for your response. How then would you propose dealing with people who do something like throwing rocks at cars? I’d have thought that if ever there was a situation that demanded outright punishment, something as deliberately malicious as this would be it.

When I was about 7 years old (I think) my friend and I decided to squirt water at people’s windscreens as they went past (yes a silly and dangerous thing to do). The occupants of one car came to a screeching stop and chased us. When they caught us they told us how stupid we were and how we could have caused an accident (something we had not thought of). This was enough to make me understand that what I thought was funny, really wasn’t and we never did it again. I don’t know “who” threw the rocks at the taxi so I really can’t say what I think would be an appropriate consequence. It depends on their intentions and ability to reflect on the seriousness of what they did. Meeting the poor guys that were injured in this incident might help. Cleaning up rubbish on sides of the road (under supervision of course)? Volunteering in a rehab for car accident survivors? Anything to try and get them thinking about how their actions impact on others.

My epitaph will say “I generally didn’t go out of my way to destroy property and/or kill people.”

Apologies, it was not an overpass in this case, just straight through a car window.

It’s the personal touch that counts. True happiness comes from close interaction, not impersonal rock throwing from overpasses.

Throwing rocks off an overpass at drivers is ‘the pursuit of happiness’?

People who are made happy by this sort of thing should be confined away from the rest of the community, as should those who agree with them.

When are we going to bring back public floggings for these ‘tards, as I have called for in previous posts?

No doubt the retards who did this will be crying that they were bored, there’s not enough for them to do. Seriously do people have nothing better to do?
Suggest we hunt them, catch them and use them in a sub-human exhibit at the Zoo.

Now, now, now. As someone posted on another current thread, “It’s not only a culture of rebellion and criminal behaviour, it’s a culture of disconnection from society and using whatever one can to survive and avoid abuse (physical, emotional and financial)”.

So there – these mindless morons are just poor, disconnected, misunderstood things that deserve only our sympathy, not condemnation for being Massey-like thugs.

If you want to quote me, do it in context. I was responding to an invitation for thoughts on prison system and culture. Quite a different context to people throwing rocks at taxi’s out in the community. Perhaps you should have posted your response on that thread rather than this one. Then it might have made some sort of sense……sort of

Creative Canberran….if you are going to quote me, do it in context. I was responding to a request for thoughts about prison culture – not people throwing rocks at taxi’s out in the community. Perhaps you should stop being a bitch and post a constructive response on the relevant thread instead.

Sounds like you know these offenders personally and Mr Massey too. How do you know they are Massey like? Do tell……or is this just another of you uninformed generalisations?

Remind me again how many millions the govt is spending on protecting us from rock throwers by installing cages around overpasses? Clearly the troubled yoof / criminal underclass/ general d**kheads of canberra are adapting by bypassing overpasses and throwing rocks from regular footpaths.

Instead of overpasses, maybe we should be building cages around these scumbags and their neighbourhoods instead.

I think that’d be a waste of potential food for the carnivorous exhibits.

Aww, I was hoping phone books were involved 🙁

Firstly, that sucks and I hope the victims recover with no dramas.

Secondly…
“…on Belconnen Way, at the intersection with Macarthur Avenue in O’Connor…”

Macarthur Ave doesn’t intersect with Belconnen Way. It changes to Fairfax St at the Miller Street lights. Hopefully that doesn’t cause any dramas further down the track.
