Rod later returned to The Herald as a sub-editor. In 1993 he won a Prodi award for his coverage of the Australian peacekeeping operations in Somalia.

Rod was appointed editor of The Post Group of Newspapers in 1996.

From 1998 he spent four years in senior positions on the Herald’s night desk, including production editor and deputy night editor, before being appointed deputy editor in 2002. He was appointed editor of the Newcastle Herald in July 2003.”
