Rollerderby

The Canberra Roller Derby League are celebrating the commissioning of their new dedicated training facility in Fyshwick to be known as “The Cannery”.

The Cannery is a physical manifestation of the hard work by the league’s skaters and their countless hours of volunteered for the sport they love so much. Special mentions to Belly Up, Sugar Plum Crazy, Cherry Axe Wound and Rainbow Spite who put in an amazing amount of behind the scene work, which has already proven to be such an investment for the league.

The league will definitely benefit from having access to their own space throughout the week. The Cannery allows the league the opportunity to improve the quality of training by providing more training sessions and a focused training timetable. Training sessions are no longer over crowded and there are frequent opportunities for team-focused pre-bout training, sessions run by visiting interstate and overseas trainers and more potential for future Fresh Meat intakes.

This huge team effort means big things not only for the league, but the surrounding community who can also benefit from the space. Canberra Roller Derby League have big plans for 2011 with their home teams and Vice City Rollers travel team, and having a specialised training venue will assist them in taking it to the next level.

Amazing what people can do without government subsidy when they put their backs into it.

Incidentally it’s not too late to get tickets for the March 19 clash with the Victorian Allstars at the AIS Arena.

Is this the same as the rollerderby stuff I used to watch on Saturday morning black and white TV back in the 60s? Lots of beefy women in tights roller skating around a rink beating the shit out of each other in World Championship Wrestling style?

The “Cherry Axe Wound” name would seem to imply that this is the case. And +1 to Luther B for beating me to the mark. 🙂
