Having moved to ‘Berra and learning that the city is all about making your own fun, I’d like to start a weekly social roleplaying group.

I did go to the roleplaying society at ANU but it was all neckbeards and black clothes and not alot of normal. I’m looking for a new group of mates who get together once a week for a beer, some pizza and a few over-told roleplaying stories from the past (Some actual gaming would be good too).

Are there any established groups that would welcome a new player who has actually dated girls from time to time and even been exposed to the sun in the last 6 years.

I’ve played AD&D, D&D 3rd Ed and Earthdawn – but always happy to learn a new system.

Hello,

I’m from the RPGMeetup group. We are a group of roleplaying game enthusiasts who get together once a month (and usually once a week for beers) to talk about games and provide an opportunity for people to meet up and maybe get involved in games. We always welcome new people and encourage them to get into a game.

If you are interested, I suggest you check out the website (www.rpgmeetup.com) to see what sort of games are on offer on the boards. You can also use the boards to advertise games, talk about games and discuss whatever random stuff that appeals to you.

If you like D&D there are a number of D&D games running at the moment, from 2nd edition to 4th edition, some of which are looking for players. If you can’t find a game you want to play then consider running one instead!

There are also a number of other games if D&D is not your thing or you just want to try something different.

Hey, Blake here. I am just about to start a new 2e campaign with my brother (maybe sister will play too). We are looking for new players. You (or anyone else) should get in touch at blakus_javus@hotmail.com if you are interested.

We are neither neckbeards, black clad types or shut ins! Just liked the game since we were kids. Will probably play most weeks. Its a 2e game but we are happy to teach people who have only seen the new versions.

Your quote, “Cleaning ale”. I meant to type ‘Cleansing ale’.

For want of an ‘s’, the meaning was lost.

An ‘s’, my kingdom for an ‘s’.

Coffee enema could be good actually, I’d get my caffine hit and not have to add as much sugar.

Cleaning ale?

What, is that like a coffee enema?

eyeLikeCarrots10:58 am 12 Feb 09

I’ve never spent more than about $80 on source books for a game system. If someone wants to spend more they are welcome too it. I’d much rather spend the extra on a cleaning ale and some pizza. Baby Jebus and his Dad or the Flying Spagetti Monster (insert your diety of choice) put the only extended source book I’ll ever need in my head.

Some people like role playing, some dont and I’ve never been able to define a typical roleplayer to a single personality type.

Trivia nights are great.

I used to play Warhammer as a teen. It was prohibitively expensive so I stopped.

Trivia nights are addictive, and pay much better.

Now if there was only some way to outlaw iPhones.

it helps if the organiser is watching carefully. no phone use at trivia in the trams….

overheard would kill us.

From time to time I start to think that things like this might be fun. I find the practical realities always draw me to a different conclusion.

I’ve tried it a few times, both with friends and strangers. IMHO, It’s ok if you don’t have much money (once you’ve spent the initial several hundred dollars on books), lots of time, and can spare a night a week.

But if you aren’t totally enjoying it (or the group), that 4 hours+ is a long drag. And it only takes 1 person, to make you want to drop out of a long running campaign. Personally, I’d rather play a strategic board game with an end date.

But also, IMHO, face to face rpg’ing beats the hell out of WoW online.

Having said that all that, x million RPG’ing nerds can’t be wrong….can they?

bugger that, give me monday night trivia. no dice, but pens and paper. (and there is NO way i would get 2 nights out)

Nope, I usually charge double for that sort of action.

Yep, thanks for that. Here is a teddy bear who will care about everything you say, unlike everybody else in your life obviously.

Cheers

Yeah im looking for a DND group as well.
I’ve put my name down for rpgmeetup.com but still havent been contacted by the admin to get access.

I think you’ll have more luck from the website @ http://www.rpgmeetup.com, rather than facebook.

And if you’re really keen, there’s a meeting this Saturday, 1pm at All Things Chocolate –

If you get no help from rpgmeetup and want to play DnD, get in touch with me via the admins and I will try and get you into a regular game I am trying to set up at the moment.

I did find the Canberra Gamers Society and the event that had on over the recent break. The website said they concentrate on minatures and that sort of thing. I prefer pen/paper/dice gaming as it can be alot more free-form.

The best thing would be to find a few people who want to play Earthdawn.

Al, you and I need to have a chat about how much paintball is NOT an anti-social military simulation activity by those with too much testosterone, but is really a fun game that the whole family can play (as long as they are over 16) etc etc…

do I really need to put a TIC here?

Ha! It was just a throwaway joke Kieran, and no reflection on paintball, at which I’d like to have a crack. What’s a TIC?

Next challenge, finding a family friendly RPG group. And by that I mean, one that is sensitive to the players having REALLY restricted free time due to family obligations 🙂

But yeah, RPG Meetup will set you on the right path.

There are also a couple of LARP groups, like the Camarilla

This explains the number of Malkavians I run into every freaking day…

I am a fan of the RPG7.

There’s a couple of groups on Facebook that might be of interest to you to connect with people. One for the Phenomenon convention (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=24014890393), which I highly recommend you check out (and not just cos I’m an Org forthe con) and also RPG Meetup (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=2592951555).

Hope you find the type of group you’re looking for and that we see you at Pheno this year! 🙂

Try searching Yahoo groups for canberra home games or canberra games days. We normally run RPGA games (D&D 4th edition) once a month or you can get my email address from the admins. We are trying to get a fortnightly game going at the moment.

contact Tim Sleigh from the Canberra Games Society through their webpage and they should be able to hook you up with some fellas who enjoy beer, pizza/chinese and your fare of RPGs’.
Cheers
Steve

They also play to a script

How the hell does this work?

I think he means that with D&D they use published adventures and don’t deviate much from them, as opposed to using one as the basis or a sub-plot of a home-brewed campaign. I played under a brilliant DM who could cope with derailments of his carefully planned session without blinking an eye. Poor bastard got married : – (

Gungahlin Al6:06 pm 10 Feb 09

Here’s me thinking someone found those missing Rocket Propelled Grenade launchers… A group taking paintball to a whole new level?

Woody Mann-Caruso5:25 pm 10 Feb 09

Nothing’s changed since I moved here in ’96 then.

“Anybody here play D&D?”
“What?”
“You know – beer, pizza, occasionally rolling dice as an excuse?”
“No, we all play Magic: The Gathering now. I spend so much on booster packs I have no money left for deodorant, detergent, beard combs or ponytail wax.”

They also play to a script

How the hell does this work?

O RLY!

Yeah, unfortunatley. Spent a little bit of time talking to a few of the people there and they seemed to take the whole thing a bit too seriously. They also play to a script and this reeks of uncreativity.

Nevermind, variety is the spice of life…. I prefer Madras.

Lots of little nerd islands scattered about the city – it’s difficult to find them. Mindgames is a good lead. You could try Facebook as well.

Apart from CanCon there is another games convention in June (if you can wait that long) – Phenomenon. Website at pheno.org.au .

There are also a couple of LARP groups, like the Camarilla and Mainspring (http://mainspring.ozgamer.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page)

There is also a regular Euro games board game group that meets up twice a month, if that also interests.

Here ya go – http://www.rpgmeetup.com/

A variety of both nerds and (almost) cool gamers. There’s an RPGbeerup, so things can’t be all that bad.
I’d suggest going to one of the monthly meetings, and see who you think is ok, then try to join one of their games. They also try a variety of systems.

There is the Canberra Gaming Society, but from the look of the last CANCON booklet they may have killed RPG…

speak with mind games in Civic, they may be able to point you into the direction of a group.

Where abouts are you located in the grand wide berra?
