Bakers across Tuggeranong have donated their time and expertise to create hundreds of cupcake kits which will be sold at a stall at South.Point Tuggeranong – in the centre court next to The Coffee Club – to raise funds for the RSPCA on Saturday, 26 September, between 11 am and 1 pm.

The RSPCA is conducting its annual cupcake drive a little differently this year. While still encouraging individuals and workplaces to donate by baking cupcakes and holding an event of their own, the launch will see the sale of cupcake kits, which include icing and decorations, and instructions on how to make the little cakes look like animals.

“For the past three years we’ve had a partnership with the RSPCA to launch Cupcake Day in the ACT,” says South.Point Tuggeranong marketing manager Amy Foster.

“We usually host our Cupcake Day the week before it launches nationally to bring awareness to the fundraising. We organise and set up, and the stall is staffed by volunteers.”

The RSPCA’s Cupcake Day is usually held in August, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, it will be held in October this year, officially launching nationally on 1 October and running until 31 October.

“Charities are struggling to fundraise and we want to support them as much as we can,” says Amy. “It’s also a fun way for the community to get involved. They get yummy cupcakes and support the RSPCA.”

RSPCA CEO Michelle Robertson says along with the Million Paws Walk, Cupcake Day is the non-profit animal shelter’s only other major fundraising activity. The RSPCA is encouraging people to register on its website to hold their own event and raise money for the organisation.

“All the bakers who contributed to the South.Point launch have come up with different themes,” says Michelle. “Our sample pack was pig-themed cupcakes – it looked unbelievably cute.”

The bakeries contributing to the stall’s goodies include Across the Board Cake Decorating, Dalliance, Cake Decorating Solutions, Cheryl’s Signature Cakes, Cake Loves, Flour and Frost, and Three Desserts.

Normally South.Point would have all the cupcakes baked, decorated and ready for individual sale, however this year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, people can support Cupcake Day by ordering their cupcake kits online and picking them up between 11 am and 1 pm on Saturday, 26 September, or dropping by and picking up a kit or two to support the fundraising drive.

Michelle says fundraising has been incredibly difficult this year, and she is hoping the generosity of Canberrans shines through for the cupcake drive.

“We’ve had a tough year from a fundraising perspective and we really need the support,” she says. “We’ve only had 66 people register for the cupcake drive this year so we’re hoping we can sign on some new fundraisers.”

If you would like to buy a cupcake kit from South.Point Tuggeranong, drop into the centre court on Saturday, 26 September, between 11 am and 1 pm, or ensure you don’t miss out by ordering your cupcake kit online.

If you would like to register to raise funds by holding an RSPCA Cupcake Day event, register online. Or if you would like to make a donation to the RSPCA, you can do so on its website.
