That strange noise you can hear is certain fundamentalists gnashing their teeth.

The Canberra Times brings word that the controversial abortion pill RU-486 is now available at the Marie Stopes clinic here in Canberra.

The drug, also known as mifepristone, allows women to have a chemically induced abortion during the first nine weeks of pregnancy, rather than go through a surgical procedure.

Acting Health Minister Simon Corbell said the Government had no objection to the use of RU-486 provided all legal requirements were met.

The Greens said they supported the wider choice the drug offered women. But the Liberals refused to say whether they supported the use of the drug.

Zed must be so thrilled this has come up again.

Swan, congratulatiosn on being the first to use the political reference-framing.

to the ACT Libs:
Sitting on the fence wins you no votes, and gives you splinters. You can’t be quiet about public health policy if you expect to be a viable electable Government.

Also, anyone claiming “Unborn children have human rights” here in the ACT has a hard time of it, our Human Rights Act 2004 says it in Section 9.
Unborns don’t count.

(For the record, I’m a supporter of woman’s procreative liberty, and believe its up to individual consenting parents to determine the number, timing, and spacing of their children.)

To get into the civic clinic you have to be buzzed in after stating your name over an intercom outside the locked door for security reasons.
Looking forward to seeing the wack jobs dressed in black that pray outside the clinic every Friday and their response to this.
About bloody time!

Pretty much, the people who have an objection to this have an objection to all abortion.
If abortion is legal then, this different form of it should be legal.

Neither Labor or the Liberals can genuinely say that they are operating as they intended.

Both should be guilty of deceptive trade practices under the Trade Practices Act, as there is no way that they are the parties their founders designed.

This is great to see!

Pro-lifers will be having a fit.

Kevin Rudd fails to hold true to his religious convictions, even though abortion is never mentioned in the bible.

But the Liberals refused to say whether they supported the use of the drug.

Sorry, but that’s just not good enough. If you’re purporting to be the alternative government (you haven’t given up on that, right?) then you absolutely cannot be keeping secret your position on a matter of crucial public policy.

Fantastic news

Thank you Marie Stopes Clinic for saving my arse once and I thank you again for this.

Timely reminder not to have Tony Abbott as Liberal leader at any cost …

great news

Better than an ice cream scoop. But you should only be having sex to have a Christian child.
