Russell roundabout to throw in another U-turn

The NCA are warning that getting on and off Kings Avenue Bridge is about to get trickier again:

From Saturday 12 June 2010, there will be a major change to traffic conditions at the Kings Avenue Overpass construction site (Russell roundabout).

There will be significant alteration to traffic movements along the Morshead Drive (Airport) side, with changes to mirror the existing extended U-turn arrangement on the Parkes Way (city) side.

The extension will include two U-turn lanes installed on Morshead Drive around 100 meters from Kings Avenue Bridge, controlled by a set of temporary traffic lights. Both sides of the extended roundabout will have two dedicated through lanes.

A 40km/ph speed limit will be in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There will also be advisory signage, variable message boards and vehicle speed indicators.

Motorists are warned to expect traffic delays, especially during peak hours, when passing through the altered Russell roundabout. Drivers are strongly encouraged to plan alternate routes, take public transport and allow additional time when travelling to the Canberra Airport.

Well, you were warned.

But doesn’t that mean the horrendous “merge” onto Commonwealth bridge? The chumps coming at it from Parkes Way have the worst wait to get up there!

But maybe that’s still faster than any of the alternatives…?

Ah, I had forgotten about that merge, I’m not sure what it’d be like of a morning (probably a whole lot better than in the evening). I can tell you that there is consistently little traffic after Russell heading westbound on Parkes way in the morning though.

Also i’d probably avoid posting anything more detailed than the suburb (and i’d still be reluctant to do that) where you live or work. The internet is a dangerous place.

Should I just submit a map of where I live and where I work and have you guys plot my journey for me?

Just come off limestone a bit before anzac Pde and go thru the last bit of civic to cwth ave bridge. A couple more traffic lights, but no stuffing around with roadwork, or trying to merge with seamless fast traffic from a dead stop.

Hmmm, if i were you I’d be going right onto Parkes way from Anzac Parade rather than left towards Russell. Go across the Commonwealth avenue bridge and you can avoid the Russell road works all together.

This intersection is getting too complex. Can someone please draw a picture of how I get from Limestone Av direction to Kings Av headed into Deakin and vice versa?

Otherwise I’ll get there on Monday morning and end up driving to the moon or something.

You’ll also probably avoid some of the traffic lights around state circle.

All this so the politicians can get to the airport 5 minutes earlier. Of course now they can depart a bit later (five minutes maybe).

Hmm I like to get to the airport on time, I’m not a politician, I think the roadworks are a great idea, having a huge roundabout like that is just asking for trouble.

Yeah people have a tendency to go through there fast, it’s just cause they don’t wanna stick around near the new ASIO building to long, all your personal thoughts will be read….

I have seen police enforcing road works in other areas and after you see it once you tend to slow down because due to construction and the like they are potentially less visible than they otherwise might be.

Also, who doesn’t love going 40km/h through there. My only problem is that people will speed around me thereby negating my attempt to annoy them.

“Police enforce road works speed limits” sign are a joke…

The signs ARE the enforcement.

Ah well, one more obstacle for the peanuts to scream through with their foot flat to the floor (try doing the speed limit (that’s 40 kilometers an hours) and watch the abuse) through there one day and watch the abuse.
