Canberra Champion Mountain Biker James Williamson died in his sleep last night in South Africa, a very sad day for the Canberra MTB Community.

Williamson could not be roused on Tuesday morning by teammate Shaun Lewis, according to reports. He was rushed to Ceres Private Hospital but was pronounced dead at 6.47am local time (3.47pm yesterday AEDT).

Williamson, one of Canberra’s most successful mountain biking exports and a respected cycling journalist, was competing in a two-man team with Lewis, co-sponsored by Enduro magazine, of which he was editor, and Canberra design company Swell.

Missed this before. My condolences.

I only met Willo a few times but he always came across as an unassuming and decent bloke, and a phenomenal rider. Wish I had a fraction of the skill and athleticism he had on the single track. Very sad news. My condolences to his family, Niki, and team mates.

So shocked to see this news when I visited the CT site this morning. Willo was indeed a nice guy, a talented rider and dedicated journo. He will be sorely missed. Condolences to Niki, his family, team mate and friends.

I think Jim Trail has wrapped up Willo’s life and times very nicely on 666. See http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2010/03/24/2854902.htm

It’s a big loss for cycling and the community as whole. Vale Willo.

Having only met and spoke to Willo at the various races in our little MTB Community, his death still comes as a big shock. His great smile, passion for riding and all-round nice guy personality will be sorely missed.

Deepest condolences for his family, Niki and Shaun.

I’m assuming MTB is mountain bike?
