Saddo Second Life Librarians come to Canberra

johnboy 12 January 2007 18

One would think that the purpose of spending time in a virtual world would be to do something different to what one does in real life.

But it seems that many of Australia’s librarians are getting into second life and choosing to be, er, Librarians…

A Perthican one is coming to Canberra to speak at the National Library about the work librarians are doing (as librarians) in Second Life.

Wow! I’m going to give a talk on Second Life at the Australian National Library on Wednesday 14th February, 12:30 – 1:30pm in the Library Theatre as part of their “Digital Culture” series.

One supposes this is a more positive use of the technology than creating an abused past with which to justify a wasted life, or having simulated intercourse.

So, before we all scream “Get a life”, any Second Lifer’s out there who want to explain what we’re missing out on?

I hate computer games…

And I hate scouts…

And those funny little men in green tunics and pointy hats that live at the end of my garden…

oh…

Nuff said…

I realised I was a person playing a computer game in which I simulated a person playing a computer game.

Made my head hurt.

in my opinion, this article, though satire, perfectly represents what second life is about. I.E. disturbing sexual perversions

definatley a reason. Kind of when you realize your not doing your housework in real life because you’re doing it in a game.

Kind of reminds me of The Sims. There’s a reason I stopped playing that game (about six years ago).

Life is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so…..

What? You purchase money in the game with real money? That’s stupid. I don’t want to be to low-income dork in my SECOND life. I think i’ll stick with killing orcs and collecting triforces or some shit.

If I join 2nd Life maybe I can indulge in 2nd lunch…

My 1st life is so busy I don’t need a 2nd life… those who have time for a 2nd life should probably focus on their 1st 🙂

It’s about cyber librarians or something…

I think we should bring back huge repositories of old musty books from eons past.

Now that would excite me more.

My librarian avatar is there for the professional connection and collaboration, experimenation with providing service to people using a different interface, creative expression, fun and adding to my skills (things like scripting). Feel free to come and check it out for yourself. 14th Feb 12:30 to 1:30pm, Library Theatre.

Now..my other av.s go there for totally different things indeed 🙂

You ain’t missing much… it is effectively IRC and MSN/Yahoo Messenger on steroids with the ability to manipulate objects and surroundings in the environment.
