Safety in Canberra?

Since moving to Canberra in August last year, I’ve had three separate issues where I have been really worried for my safety and have called the police.

The most recent was this weekend, early on Sunday morning at about 5.45am when some jerk-wad tried to break into our house, while we were home tucked up in our beds.

The other two times, a junkie pervert at the back of Ainslie shops harassed me on the way to work (on two separate occasions); and just before Christmas some guy was poking around our front yard and tells me he’s just checking the gas meter but he’s not driving an ActewAGL vehicle and when I called ActewAGL they said no-one was scheduled to read the meter…

I live in Ainslie, which is generally a really nice place to live, despite all this stuff happening.

Anyways, I guess I’m just wondering if this stuff is normal for Canberra/Ainslie/Northside?

I’ve lived in Sydney most of my life, and also lived in some rougher places (Lightning Ridge), but have never called the police before moving to Canberra…

It makes me so angry that I can’t feel safe in my own home or suburb.

That would be quite normal in most cities in Western Europe. But here I very rarely lock the doors of my house or even my car.

I did have my old Subaru stolen once. Well… the car doors were unlocked and the keys were somewhere in the car. I got the car back too! The cop that dealt with it was just fabulous, even though obviously it was my own stupid fault that the car got taken.

That’s the only incident I’ve experienced here in 14 years.

I don’t suppose you moved into a street beginning with ‘S’? Do you have cable ties around the hot water pipes just outside your laundry door? I only ask as I left Ainslie at around the same time for the very same reasons and sympathise quite heavily with your situation. If you think you may be in the house I’m suggesting, don’t hesitate to get in contact with me via the site’s moderator/overlord. I may not have any good news, but I may be able to offer a little bit of background and advice.

Is it an ex drug dealer house? Friend of mine moved into an ex drug dealers house and for up to 5 years afterwards would get people rocking up to the front door at 3am asking to score. Would then get told that that dude doesn’t live here anymore and they would sneak through the back yard looking for plants because they didn’t believe them.

This is a story in the making… do tell more… please =)

I’ve lived in Canberra for 2 years now (Giralang & Harrison) and I have never had to call the police. I feel quite safe.
I lived in SW Sydney for 2.5 years and in that time we had 3 attempted home invasions when I was home alone which was scary as hell (hubby off with the army), we got burgled once and another time someone tried to steal my car and when they couldn’t steal it they trashed it instead.

Welcome to the wonderful world of gentrification. The inner north has only become super trendy relatively recently, and as happens the world over it can be a bumpy ride as all the cashed up trendies gradually flood in and flush out all the riff raff. Give it another few years and then all you will have to deal with is noise complaints from all the weeknight public service executive cocktail parties.

You need to pick your suburbs – it’s not always obvious.

Never had those issues where I am, I feel very safe most of the time. I think statistically Canberra is that way as well. I do think those issues would be more common in the Inner North though – doesn’t surprise me.

I’ve lived here 30ish years and think Canberra is as safe as anywhere. Sure Charny is a little Charny, and the closer you get to Civic the more likely you are to see/experience personal violence or drunken b & e’s, but on the whole I feel safer here than anywhere I have lived (Darwin, Brisbane, Melbourne).

If you like numbers, take a look at the canberra crime rates here :http://www.police.act.gov.au/community-safety/crime-statistics.aspx

Ainslie’s burglary rate is 7 times Charnwoods. That suprises me.

Are you at the southern end of Ainslie? It might be the proximity to Ainslie Village, or even just its walkable distance from Civic. You see a lot more “interesting” people and things in that area.. the public housing flats…

have friends who live on the walk up to the village and they have had their place hit on numerous occasions, usually prospectors, despite a large dog – have come in through the roof, snatch and run of kids’ pocket money coin jars and everything in between. street adjacent to them hasn’t had a single reason for alarm. so definitely a factor. and ainslie chemist is a methadone dispensary, so attracts sundry types… sorry to hear of your predicaments, but canberra is generally a ‘safe’ place – noting danger lurks in all corners of this funny globe (since when did a globe acquire corners, anyway? anyone?)

I’ve lived in the inner north for the last 7 years or so with no major dramas, aside from a few plants being knocked off at increasingly annoying intervals. Which does suck, but I’d rather that than walking into a trashed house with stuff missing.

Perhaps our somewhat exposed corner block is less attractive to crime such as theft etc, but ripe for petty stuff like stealing plants.

I also think inner north, and many parts of older Canberra suburbs, are very hit and miss with crime rates. Sometimes even in the same street.

I’m sorry you’ve had what seems to be a rough trot, but hopefully the perps will move on soon.

Perhaps there is less problems in inner city Sydney because everyone has one inch thick bars on all their windows and deadlocked doors.

The crims and loonies have no doubt become accustomed to the situation that prevails where the police are highly unlikely to come if called, unless there’s violence and mayhem happening. So they are probably a bit more active, blatant and un-worried.

I have lived in Canberra for over 30 yrs and have never been assaulted, 2 burglaries (both day time) and one spray painted car.

Then again (a) my anecdotes do not constitute evidence of anything and presumably I have a very different response had I been the subject of, say, a random assault (b) I am male and tall and (c) random events are, by definition, random and you are just lucky or unlucky.

Ainslie is, of course, only geographically inner north; culturally its more Charnwoody…

I live in Campbell, and I’ve never had to call the cops or anything, rarely even seen cops around my suburb.

But I know a lot of other suburbs are really not that safe, and don’t be walking around civic at night time when you’re not in populated areas (i.e don’t park at the junkie flats and what not if you’re going clubbing).

A few friends of mine have been attacked and I know three different girls who have had guys attempt to rape them. Only one got caught (was a cab driver… so even that’s not that safe >_>) so that doesn’t help at all either.

Tbh I feel more safe walking around Sydney at 2am then I do in Canberra. But then again I’ve always lived in Canberra, which has given me more time to see/know of all the bad sh!t that happens here in comparison to other places…

Anyway.

I have a friend in Downer whose car was stolen mid last year (not that far from ainslie), there was that guy murdered last year or something near antill st.

It’s weird about the junkie at Ainslie shops, generally during the day they hang around garema pl asking for money/cigarettes. or various interchanges…

But yeah, I think it’s kinda normal for Canberra, judging from what has happened to other people and not me…
