A real blast from the past in the Canberra Times today with Samuel Gordon Stewart turning up in a puff piece for the Liberals’ law lecturing fitness instructor Elizabeth Lee.

The winningest blogger ever produced by the ACT was last seen taking part in Gina Rinehart’s failed coup attempt so it’s good to know he’s still kicking around.

Samuel’s 2007 run for the seat of Fraser as an independent was captured on YouTube.

A funny but completely harmless little tory.

I went and had a poke around his blog. What a funny little guy (and I mean that in the least offensive way possible). He seems like he’s 25 going on 60.

I particularly enjoyed his correspondence with various radio personalities. It reminded me of Adrian Mole’s correspondence with John Tydeman of the BBC.

Yeah, I get a kind of perverse enjoyment from reading his site. So misguided in so many ways and as you say 25 going on 60 – even his music taste is mostly depressingly dated.

He is even still pushing the climate change is bullsh1t bandwagon.

I’m pretty sure he would have called in to Alan Jones to give him support for all the bullying poor Jones has copped and he probably also thinks the Jones apology was short, sincere and on topic.

Slightly OT, but I sat next to Ms Lee and some younger supporters at Ainslie for the AFL GF.

I must warn any potential Lee/Liberal voters that she appeared to be supporting Sydney.

So, we have evidence that Zed is using a car that has NSW number plates AND a report that one of the local Liberal candidates barracks for the Sydney Swans!

Quick, someone call Katy’s dirt unit! 🙂

I sometimes wonder if, for example, I’m the only Canberran who regularly listens to Glenn Beck’s radio show.

Do you listen for the insightful, intelligent and balanced analysis of current events and politics?

Because it is none of those things.

So I’m not alone in listening to Glenn Beck in Canberra then?

Well I certainly don’t listen to talk radio for “balance”. I listen because the host has a view on current events with which I may or may not agree, or in the case of Glenn’s show, three hosts with somewhat differing views. I also listen for entertainment.

I expect news to provide a more balanced approach than talk shows as talk shows are about opinions and views. That said, I don’t believe that any one news source can provide balance either as everything presented in all forms of the media is shaped by the world view of the person or people presenting and producing it. Multiple sources of news, with slightly different takes on events, and talk shows putting forth more opinionated takes on events, are in my view collectively the way to achieve balance as, with all of those differing views and bits of information, one can gain a better understanding of what really happened and how different people view it.

Back to the specific example, I see more intelligence and insight in Glenn’s show than you do. Perhaps that’s because I “get” Glenn’s sense of humour and can tell when he is being serious and when he is using humour to make a point where his point is not the exact words he has spoken. For someone who doesn’t understand Glenn’s sense of humour, I can see how his show could seem like unintelligible nonsense. I, though, gain entertainment and insight from it, even when I don’t agree with him or his co-hosts.

Who?

Ah, my friend, many happy, happy hours in the archives await you!!

I remember when SGS was always on the RiotACT. Fun times, especially when there was the odd catch-up…. A lot of regular Rioters have sorta moved on. It’s a shame.

Is that pimply-faced youth really SGS? I always thought he was an old bloke, with a pipe.

Thank you – I actually didn’t google it because I thought it might be a paedophile reference of some kind.

Is this the guy who just got evicted from Big Brother?

Good afternoon,

When I started yesterday, I certainly didn’t expect to end up on the front and second pages of the CT, or on The RiotACT, let alone both on the same day.

You mean memories of how he attempted suicide because of the abuse he was receiving on this site?

Yes, I remember as well.

Really? I don’t. That particular stage of my life occurred long after I stopped interacting regularly on RiotACT, and for very different reasons. I don’t recall ever blaming RiotACT for it, and I’ll set the record straight by saying RiotACT had nothing to do with it.

Is this the teenager who used to be obsessed with 2CC talkback radio?

Yep, but not a teenager any more, not by a long shot. Still very interested in talk radio, although my tastes in radio have skewed a bit more towards Sydney and US talk radio these days. I sometimes wonder if, for example, I’m the only Canberran who regularly listens to Glenn Beck’s radio show.

I must say all Ms Lee’s workers I have seen are incredibly energetic. I was crawling down to Tilley’s for a coffee about 10 am one weekend, and they were almost sprinting from letterbox to letterbox, in a way that my addled brain could hardly comprehend. They had a nice line in chat about the weather, too.

I even met the candidate, handing out near Tilley’s, and she was very nice, and accepted it when I refused her information and said I just couldn’t vote Liberal. She even smiled. So if you vote purely on impeccable manners she’s the lady for you.

I’m sure Elizabeth and her volunteers (and I’m one of them, but I don’t speak for her or the other volunteers) would be really happy to hear that. A lot of effort, energy and excitement has gone in so far, and there’s a lot left.

About the CT article. When Noel Towell was asking Elizabeth questions, I was concerned about how it would turn out, so I was pleasantly surprised today to see that it was quite fair. There were some bits about Elizabeth’s background which didn’t make their way in to the article and which I think would have made it more informative, but on the whole I think it went well.

I believe that Noel is trying to do a series of profile pieces on candidates, so I’d expect to see more of them (but maybe not more of me) in future editions of The Canberra Times. And, if my part in the photograph has inadvertently led to more people hearing a bit about Elizabeth, then I’m really happy as I chose to support Elizabeth because she cares about efficient delivery of local services and, in my view, has the energy and enthusiasm to make a difference.

I don’t speak on behalf of her campaign, and I don’t want my words to be interpreted as being Elizabeth’s words…but if I’m given an opportunity like this, then of course I’m going to explain why I like Elizabeth.

Oh, and I should note that, like most people, my views have changed a bit since that video was filmed in 2007. Without going in to too much detail, I think the main differences are that I’m not so keen on centralisation of power at the federal level, and that I’m much more of a free market person these days. I am glad that I didn’t have enough support to continue with that campaign in 2007 as I look back now and think that I was far too naive back then to have been an effective or useful member of parliament.

Regards,
Samuel Gordon-Stewart

Yesss Samuel Gordon-Stewart! So many fond memories….

You mean memories of how he attempted suicide because of the abuse he was receiving on this site?

Yes, I remember as well.

Seriously?

Long before I felt that I was being driven to attempt suicide because of interactions with others on RA, I’d simply stop coming to RA and find something better to do with my time.

Nobody ever attempts suicide for just one reason.

Do you live in Molonglo? If so then you really need to get out more.

“It looks like I’m going to have to take the almost unprecedented move of buying The Canberra Times. One appears to be in it with the lovely Elizabeth Lee, family and supporters. Normally I favour The Daily Telegraph or The Australian or the Herald Sun. (A confusion-busting reminder for my American friends: the Australian Liberal Party is roughly synonymous with your Republican Party)”

If I may be so bold, bloody hell… Who on this lump of space rock refers to themselves as “one”. The fact that he favours the Terror and the Hun on top of that.

One might also like to remind the other one that if you are going to refer to the party by the longer name, it’s the Liberal Party of Australia.

I think Prince Charles is the other bloke who refers to himself as “one”. Personally, I’m baffled by the polo shirt buttoned up at the neck.

Is this the teenager who used to be obsessed with 2CC talkback radio?

Must have some friends at the Canberra Times given the puff piece today: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/family-the-key-to-liberals-aspirations-20121007-277n6.html

No mention of how she can afford an campaign office in the City, or why she’s running other than she’s always wanted to do this kind of work. Whole thing comes across as a self serving game more than anything. If Twitter is anything to go by, she’ll be lucky to get half a quota.
