Save the dinosaurs?

The Canberra Times is joining the campaign of the Press Gallery’s Misha Schubert to save the Questacon dinosaurs.

It seems the powers that be want to replace them with “a new and innovative exhibition about water”.

Who in their right mind would choose that over dinosaurs??? (Unless it’s a wave pool with water slides but that seems unlikely).

Email misha_schubert@hotmail.com if you want to get on the bandwagon to save Canberra’s dinosaurs.

We’re members and so go to Questacon on a pretty regular basis. My four year old loves them and never fails to visit them before going to the kids area. My two year old is now fascinated by them. I have to say it is a shame that they are moving onto Melbourne. Let’s face it all kids (big and small love dinosaurs!!)….and no I haven’t yet been to the dinosaur museum….but there didn’t seem to be any recommendations to go!!

I hope they stay – my two an abit year old has a love/terrified relationship withh them.

@Helen But they’re not being thrown out though. According to the CT article, they’re being given to an interstate museum, Scienceworks in Melbourne.

They scared me when I first went to Questacon, when I was a child. When I went last year (at the age of 24) and saw that they were back, I couldn’t get out of that gallery fast enough! Some childhood fears never go away, no matter how much your significant other laughs at you…

But that’s no reason for them to be thrown out – maybe if they were given to the Dinosaur Museum people might start going there again?

Are these the same Dinosaurs I saw in 1988, and in Thailand at some time?

As I’m aware, these dinosaurs have been touring back and forth from Questacon since 1988.

Does no-one bother reading articles anymore?
FTA: “they say the dinosaurs, some of which date back to when Questacon first opened in 1988.
It won’t be their first trip away from the capital, as since 1997 they have toured extensively all over the country and even to Thailand.

They scare the hell out of my toddler. I’d be happy for them to go.

I was there on the weekend and they were squeaking…
Nothing a bit of oil wouldn’t fix although they were looking tired.

Dinosaurs are old hat…

The dinosaurs should be retired out to a “Dinosaurs vs Zebras” installation at Lake George.

Let me ask you this, are you going to be one of those parents that in a few years time, when you’re children are older, you’ll be complaining that none of the exhibits ever change?

The Questacon exhibits change fairly regularly, and some are great, some less so. The gallery that has replaced the original ‘Forces’ gallery at Questacon is pretty crap compared to what it was 15 years ago. Too much plastic and marketing and nowhere near enough substance.

My friend used to work on them.
These are the same Dinosaurs that were there for the opening in 1988. so they are well over 20 years old now.
They use very old technology and parts are not readily available for them. It gets more and more expensive to fix them, every time things go wrong.

Things need to be changed around in places like this often.

The most exciting thing about the Dinosaur museum is the shop, they have some great staff and stuff on sale. The displays are layered in about an inch of dust, with boot prints all the way through signalling the path someone has taken through the display.

My kids love the Dinos at Questacon, but when the rubber has holes and paint is wearing off, it starts to look a bit 80’s.

I wonder what the National Dinousaur Museum (in Nicholls) thinks about all of this?

Have you been there? It’s pretty ordinary, not to mention on the wrong side of the lake.

I can’t believe someone has the time and the energy to start up petitions about Questacon changing an exhibition!! I would have thought Water would be a good exhibition anyway for educational purposes. I mean, you can live without dinosaurs, you can’t live without water….

My grandson really liked the “saws” at Questacon. Three weeks later he is still talking about them (must have made a big impression for a 2.5 year old). Reports back from him say that the National Dinousaur Museum was a bit lame (not actual words he used).

I wonder what the National Dinousaur Museum (in Nicholls) thinks about all of this? Can’t kids go there to see dinosaurs? Isn’t that what its for?
