Scandinavian groceries/treats in Canberra?

Scandinavians may be georgously tall and pale but they are also Europe’s culinary little secret.

There are a handful of phenomenal Swedish restaurants around Australia but I’m more in the market for little deli items and even alcoholic drinks.

Are there any delis or market stalls around Canberra with Scandinavian treats?

Vintage Cellars in Oaks Estate has Linie Aquavit.

ALSO packages of risgrøt! i always just bring stacks home with me and hoard them as long as possible.

we buy klippfisk at the aforementioned delis in belconnen and civic, as well as brunost. would love it if i found somewhere selling norsk melkesjokolade or other tasty freia treats though :(((

The first sentence of OPs post made me think there was a cuisine de cannibale thing happening in Canberra.

kind of sad that it turns out to be about surstromming and blodpalt 🙂

Agree about the larger deli at Belconnen markets for Finnish fare – Marianne chocolates, Fazer chocolate, salmiakki, Fazer crisp and Finn Crisp for näkkileipä/knäkebröd. One of the delis at Fyshwick markets also sells Finnish and Swedish crispbreads. Also you can find Norwegian brunost there, as well as cloudberry/gooseberry jam etc.

More sporadically, the multicultural festival is a good source of Nordic foods (Finnish Lutheran Church stall for presidentti/juhlamokka coffee, sisu lollies, salmiakki, and sima and korvapuusti!), as is the annual Scandinavian Christmas Bazaar (the only time of year I’ve found aquavit in Canberra). Sometimes there are some other small events that the Scandinavian Association holds that have stalls selling food.

If anyone knows a store that sells Norwegian aquavit I’d be extremely grateful!

Give Birgitta Sjöström a ring (6231 5732).
She supplies a number of Swedish goodies to the Scandinavian Australian Association.

Leksand Crispbread, Lingonberries, Cloudberries, Herring, Lollies & Chocolates, Fish products etc…

Lovely lady!

Fyshwick markets sell Finnish crisp bread and the Finnish Lutheran Church in Turner has coffee and stuff…

Drive up to Homebush Bay and visit the Ikea store. They have the lot.

As a confirmed scandophile, I would also try Edelweiss deli in Woden. There is also http://www.swedishgoodies.com.au/ – they are a supplier in Brisbane who deliver. Not an enormous range, but beats having to go to IKEA to get your provisions…

Both delis at the Belconnen Markets have some Scandinavian food, but the larger one (closer to the stage) usually has a better range…we’ve gotten Finn Crisps, Maribou and Fazer chocolote from there, and they also have Finnish style sausages. We’ve also managed to get Presidentti coffee whenever the Finnish or Scandanavian society has a stall (eg. at the Multicultural festival). Most liquor shops sell Swedish cider, but I think it’s bottled here rather than imported.

Supabarn in Civic sells knäckebröd. Any decent-sized bottle shop should sell vodka/aquavit/schnapps. You can buy salmon, dill and potatoes ANYWHERE!

There might be other places in Canberra but I know IKEA in Sydney will definitely have whatever you’re looking for.
