Katy Gallagher has announced a $50,000 scholarship in memory of Dr Peter Sharp AM.
“Dr Sharp was an exceptional man, a much-loved and admired Canberran who was a passionate advocate for Indigenous health,” the Chief Minister said.
“He was the longest serving member of Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Service where he was Medical Director.”
Dr Sharp’s association with Winnunga began in the 1980s when he would travel from Sydney to Canberra every weekend to run a Saturday morning clinic for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. He developed a culture of outreach, going on to make home visits to patients and extending that outreach to prisoners.
“As Health Minister, I have had the privilege of watching Winnunga mature into a world-class health service, respected both locally and nationally, and most importantly, supported by the community it serves so well,” Ms Gallagher said.
