School based apprenticeships in Canberra?

Just wondering if anyone knows a building business that takes on school based apprentices.

My son (year 10) is interested in doing a ASBA in carpentry but we are having difficulty finding a placement.

Seems that not too many people are willing to take on school based apprentices.

Keeping kids in school with this initiative appears easier said than done.

If all else fails, you could consider looking in NSW. Goulburn has a fair bit of activity in this sector (lots of construction up there) and it’s possible Queanbeyan does, too.

Masa Constructions sponsors many charities but are not affiliated with any one ministry or church. Giving back to the local community is something all businesses should be involved in.

Just a quick question re masa construction. Is it by any chance affiliated with a ministry/church??

Thanks everyone for the advice. Will follow it ALL up and will also send an email to masa constructions 🙂 thanks again

Masa Constructions Australia Pty Ltd is a commercial construction company who is always looking out for suitable young people to take on apprenticeships as they are the future of our industry! Masa believes it is the duty of ALL empoyers to take on apprentices in whatever industry they are in. Your son is welcome to submit his resume into the office at 44 Maryborough Street Fyshwick, email risto@masaconstructions.com.au or have the school call on 62808717. If he has the right attitude & works hard he will potentially follow on from many other school based apprentices or trade apprentices we have engaged & are now qualified & employed full-time with Masa.

My daughter is doing an ASBA in sport and rec. It was organised through her school. She is in year 11. Took a while to find a placement but the vocational training/careers teacher was really helpful. She had to go through a two stage interview process and write a resume etc. Hers is through Australian Training Company in Phillip. Try calling them or RGT. They might be able to help out

There are a few options open for you:
– try contacting Master Builders Group Training, phone: 02 6280 9119 They also have a fantastic apprentice training facility out at Fyshwick.
– Try calling the Construction Industry Training & Employment Association (CITEA)
Phone: 02 6257 8344
– Contact your local Australian Apprenticeship Centre
– The school should be able to assist, talk to the careers counselor or one of the trades teachers, they may have contacts for previous ASBA placements.

Good luck.

Hi Sunshine, have you tried talking to CIT. They are a registered training provider and may be able to point you in the right direction. Unfortunately there is not much money in the construction business at the moment – people are not getting paid, as a result they are dropping apprentices. But try CIT as a start point.
Give the CIT Student Services Hub a call on (02) 6207 3188 or email: infoline@cit.edu.au
