School Enrolment Question

This is not the case in the inner north where most schools are full and considering adding demountable classrooms for next year to cope with demand from in-area enrolments. There are several schools that won’t even accept siblings of current students if the family has moved out of area.

But if a school is not full you should have no trouble.

Word from the teachers I know is that it’s quite possible to get your out-of-area kid into a primary school. While in-area kids get automatic enrolment, most schools usually don’t have enough in-area kids to fill all their places. Once all the in-area kids have places, out of area kids get places in the order in which they were enroled.

You just need to front up as early as possible on the day enrolments open – as in 5-6am – and line up at the school’s entry. Then you’re the first in line and your kid is the first on the list of out-of-area kids and is very likely to get a place.

Why don’t you do what half the population of Kaleen primary does, register the kid to your grandparents address.

Totally depends on what group of kids your kid ends up in with.
There are lots of offspring of academics there, who don’t need to go to a private school to do well, thanks to an academic atmosphere at home and modest affluence, but there are lots of rough kids there as well.

You could say that about any school in Canberra with the possible exception of Kingsford Smith

They do a course in sandwich ballistics at the Lyneham High School.
Maybe the infants school has a primer course for that subject.

The wording used is that the child must live in the enrolment area. Owning a property in that area doesn’t help you get priority enrolment access.
