School of music on the skids?

The ABC has a story on trouble within the School of Music with declining enrollments making it unviable in the long term.

Slightly more worrying is the vice-chancellor of the Australian National University, Ian Chubb, responding only by complaining about being the last to hear about it.

No loss.

Put the money towards science and our society will benefit.

A lot of specialist schools around the country are having the same problem, Vic College of the Arts for one.

Melb Uni has a good idea. If there is room in a class because enrollments are low, they let anyone come in and take the class for a semester (fee-based, of course). Keeps the teachers active (and employed!), the Uni gets the money, the community gets a bit of well-taught adult-education. Win-win I reckon.

I did a couple of semesters of fine art at MelbUni a few years ago. Really enjoyed it.

It could well be that their standards are too high. But I’m sure in the past there haven’t been many problems, why sacrifice prestige and standards for a possible passing phase?

Yes, but I think part of the problem is that the standards are probably a little too high.

When the staff are all out of work, then maybe they’ll have lots of time to think about how stupid they’ve been?

They want to maintain a standard. Without standards even I could go there. Scary thought.

Another case of the white ants at work!
