Schoolchildren were showered with broken glass after a window blew out on an ACTION schoolbus about 3:25 pm today at Isabella Plains.

Danielle Stevenson, of Banks, said her son Taylor was travelling home from Calwell High when the Route 605 bus hit a bump near St Mary MacKillop College.

There was a very loud bang and glass went everywhere, giving one boy who was wearing shorts a scratch but it appeared no one else was injured.

Ms Stevenson if they hadn’t been wearing full jumpers with hoodies and long pants it would have been a different story.

The scene inside the bus where schoolchildren were showered with glass.

The affected window was on the left-hand side next to the front door.

Taylor, who is in Year 9, said the bus was half full and carrying students from several schools including Callwell High and Theodore Primary, some as young as six.

Taylor who was sitting across the aisle from the window, said the driver immediately called ACTION and was told to find a place to stop and wait for a replacement bus.

The driver eventually set his passengers down at a stop on Tharwa Drive just past the Fire Station, where they waited on the footpath for another bus or, if they had phones like Taylor, arranged lifts.

A half hour later, with no replacement bus in sight, Taylor’s grandfather picked him up.

Ms Stevenson said it was an unacceptable situation especially for a school bus. “You’d think they would have higher safety standards than the normal ones but even for the normal ones it shouldn’t happen. It’s atrocious,” she said.

ACTION was approached for comment but only said the 605 was delayed for about 15 minutes while another bus was dispatched.

How many bumps do we have like this? Lack of maintenance of roads became a major problem in Edinburgh as they struggled to pay for their Light Rail.

I can hear the writs being typed already.

What caused the glass to break obviously needs to be investigated but as to the manner in which it shattered, it did exactly what it was meant to do to minimise injuries.

Rather that break into shards with razor sharp edges that can cause serious or even fatal injuries, this glass is designed to shatter into small pieces, some of which hold together. Yes, it will cause a few minor scratches and of course there is always the risk of eye injury, but on the whole it is much, much safer than something that can slice an artery or cut to the bone when it falls on you.

That window is made of tempered glass which shatters into small pieces rather than shards. I doubt it could have caused serious damage to the children even if they didn’t have hoodies.
