Schools pushing for CCTV

Video cameras to stop bullying? Yeah, that’ll work when the bullies corner a victim in the toilets. Or outside of school. Or through phones/internet. /sarcasm

Ridiculous concept is ridiculous.

And what the hell are ‘safe’ areas? I was last in high school in 2006 and I’ve never heard of them.

I don’t think the idea is to have the CCTV in the toilets or in changing rooms, so there should be no problems there and I would assume that access to the system would only be required rarely and would be restricted to those who need it.

If there is a proven need for them, then there should be no problems installing them. The only people who should have a problem with the cameras are the people who are doing the wrong thing. Although, I’m sure there’s some civil libertarians out there jumping up and down like morons claiming invasion of privacy, with little common sense to support their arguments.

Oh yes ..pay a visit to your local High School and have the safe areas pointed out as a main feature to a parent of a prospective student.

While this is a reason to be very careful how you implement a system, it isn’t a reason not to. I mean, surely lots of video cameras will also prevent a certain amount of potential child abuse?

$400k is ridiculously high, no wonder the govt baulk at a roll out.
That would give 8 schools a good system.

I don’t think cameras will make a lick of difference. People know who the perpetrators of bullying are, and the offenders just wheel out a sob story when confronted anyway, with no punishment as a result.

I think that cameras will make a difference to the security of the students.
There is a problem with bullying and violence that the Education dept does hand stands to deny.
How many parents have had to ask for their children to be protected from other students. Bullying is a dreadful problem.
If there is no problem why do they have so many safe areas in the schools? How come they had to become a normally accepted feature of a school?

Film the lot…with sound.

Privacy is not a problem the issue of safety is and the schools and the Education Dept have a duty of care.

Make it about the victims for a change.

Are they talking about cameras in hallways and class rooms? Or just out the front for the building, like every shop, office, and many homes already have?
