The ABC brings word that Magistrate Beth Campbell has announced she is satisfied that Scott McDougall, 35, of Queanbeyan has a case to answer for the murder of Struan Bolas and Julie Tattersall (aka Julie Franco). In an incident now entering folklore as the Downer murders.
- During six days of hearing, the court heard from a forensic biologist whose report showed samples taken from between McDougall’s fingers matched Ms Tattersall’s DNA.
A former friend of the accused also told the court McDougall came home on the night of the incident with blood on his forearms and said he had grabbed a meat cleaver off a man, cut his throat then ‘hooked into him over and over’.
Autopsy reports tendered to the court show Mr Bolas died of blood loss, after suffering sharp force trauma to his head, neck and left arm which were most likely caused by a machete or meat cleaver.
Ms Tattersall died of similar injuries.
