Scotty and Nige out of the closet on the back of ratings win?

When we get a media release from Canberra FM radio it’s not to tell us about bad ratings. But they do seem very happy with their recent performance:

Canberra FM Radio stations 104.7 and mix106.3 have again dominated the Canberra radio airwaves according to the Neilsen Survey 1 results released today. 104.7 has added another notch as Canberra’s number 1 station in an unbroken run of 11 Survey wins, whilst mix106.3 has enjoyed a substantial surge in listenership to dominate morning listening across the week.

104.7’s breakfast show, Scotty & Nige are again Canberra’s favourite couple to wake up to, with recent
additions to mix106.3, Rod & Biggzy, turning around the stations fortunes in that time-slot with some very
positive growth.

Canberra FM Radio Content Director, Drew Chapman, highlights that “Rod & Biggzy have worked hard on connecting with the Canberra community and this will continue”, he added. Chapman says “MIX 106.3 has broadcast from over 20 local events since late 2011 including the Queens visit, Australia Day Live and the Royal Canberra Show and there’s more to come.”

2012 kicked off in a big way for both stations with 104.7 again delivering the region’s biggest free event, 104.7 Skyfire in its 24th year to over 130,000 spectators. While, mix106.3 sent a lucky listener away on the trip of a lifetime to Elton John’s OSCAR’s party in LA.

Canberra FM Radio now boasts 185,700 listeners across both 104.7 and mix106.3, or 51.6% of the Canberra radio audience.

Also nice that Scotty and Nige can share their “couple” status, Canberra’s favourite couple no less!

UPDATE 04/04/12 17:08: The ABC’s Station Managed Andrea Ho has chimed in with this statement:

“We take all survey results in our stride, and work with a longer-term view to please our audience.

666 ABC Canberra saw a drop in a number of programs in this survey compared to the last survey, which is a disappointment.

On the upside, we’re delighted that Ross Solly remains at number one in the Breakfast timeslot, as does our weeknight line-up featuring new Evenings host Dominic Knight and Tony Delroy. We’ve also gained ground on the weekends.

666 ABC Canberra’s strength over the longer-term, including in this survey, is with the 40+ listeners.
We’re grateful for the support of Canberra listeners over the years.”

I was lucky enough to be chosen in the Nielsen ratings survey. I’d always heard about them but never knew any one that had been selected. I say lucky enough so I could pass on my comments to the station manager in writing.

I used to listen to 104 solely until Scotty and Nige came along. Most people when you combine them together, they score higher in IQ tests but not these two fools. I can’t stand their stupid jokes and Nige’s stupid voice. I’m a pretty relaxed person but when I hear these two idiots it makes my blood boil. Plus I just can’t stand the lame ads and the huge amount of them that 104 churns out. I know lots of people like them so I guess I’m the idiot.

I moved to JJJ, Raw FM, ABC New Radio and 666ABC and I love when people say “this song is so annoying, they’ve play it like a million times” and I honestly reply with “I’ve never heard it before”.

I have to agree, they don’t seem to have a local breakfast talk radio show for old miserable people, of which i am one i guess.

I like Scotty and Nige, they don’t do a bad job when the target audience is obviously mothers taking the kids to school, teenagers and people under 30. It’s a difficult mix when you have to do that every day, and be subject to adverts and a rotating play list of about 10 songs. It’s pretty restrictive, but good that they’ve actually kept it local and not merged them all into one national commercial station to save costs.
I like the dance music late on a Saturday night on 104.7, that’s pretty good.

I confess I only listen to ABC News Radio/BBC World Service – commercial radio is the radio equivalent of nails-down-a-blackboard – I am sure it is the broadcast of choice down there in Hell. God only knows that the aliens who tune in to rogue 104/106 radio waves in 2000 years will make of the human race.

Scotty needs to ease up on the eyeliner

104’s only saving grace is they play music made in the last 20 years.

Not such a saving grace when you hear Jason Derulo mangle Toto’s Africa.

Now there’s a song that deserves to be mangled and binned forever.

They have some annoying chickiebabe doing the morning slot at 106 while the other two annoying people are away, and she spent this morning TALKING over the last minute of each song. She must think that people would rather listen to her inane chipmunk voice rather than boring music. And both of them seem to have a newsreader with the ugliest aussie pronunciation.

Shut the hell up, play music, full stop. Oh, and having the road report actually accurate and up to date would sure help too.

After being drenched in acid

Drenching yourself in acid will make any of the Canberra radio stations listenable. You might even be able to see the music, pluck it out of the air, put a lead on it and then take it for a walk in the park.

Why anyone would listen to austereo is beyond me. Every hour you get 5 minutes of news, ~12 minutes of music & 43 minutes of “what i just read on twitter/facebook”.

I now have the radio set to 97.5 Country Radio. On my 20 minute drive to work I get 20 minutes of music.

I’d rather be tied to a chair and kicked down the stairs than listen to country music.

After being drenched in acid and set on fire (is acid flammable? If not then chuck some petrol in there)

I can’t bring myself to listen to either 104 or 106 any more. The music isn’t great, the presenters suck and I loathe listening to advertising.

I have a thumb drive of stuff I like in the car which I work my way through, and periodically check out the AM band (athough I don’t listen for more than a few minutes to anything except maybe 666).

I’ll stick to Triple J.

Commercial radio drivel is absolutely awful.

Fixed that for you.

1053 2CA all the way for me. Familiar music (rather than “whoever won American Idol this week”) , works in all the classic cars that only have AM radio’s, and the DJ’s don’t have a tone of voice that makes you consider performing acts of automotive assisted homicide.

FM radio? How 20th century. I presumed everyone else listened to intelligent, thought provoking podcasts as well.

Really, why does that pathetic “newspaper” even bother to continue publishing?

Because they need something to put the ads in.

Very surprised that that ailing, circulation challenged newspaper The Canberra Times didn’t even bother to report the radio ratings today. Instead there is the usual cut and paste from The Guardian, the usual bashing of Tony Abbott in the letters page and more crawling to Julia Gillard.

A month or so back they suppressed the newspaper circulation figures which showed the paper sinking in the sunset, now they have suppressed the radio ratings which show a big increase in the ratings of 2CC – home of the CT latte set’s hated shock jocks – and a big fall in ratings for their beloved ABC.

Really, why does that pathetic “newspaper” even bother to continue publishing?

Who the hell still listens to radio these days, well except for weekend sport i suppose.

If you’re not a tradie or you don’t have a 9-5 job in the public service, is it legal to listen to 104.7 or 106.3?

Bring back Marty and Erica!

Actually I don’t really care, I haven’t listened to breakfast radio for years haha

More details at http://radiotoday.com.au/media/files/Canberra1121.jpg

Still a pretty ordinary result for the MIX breakfast show. A 2.1% increase from the historical low in the last survey (2 of 2011) is still way below how the 106 breakfast has traditionally performed (usually ranked 1 or 2 in the timeslot). 104 lost 2.0% so a net gain of brakfast listeners to Canberra FM of 0.1%.

The big gain for 106 was mornings with a 7.2% jump from the last period – obviously a lot of people tune in after Rod and Biggsy have finished (possibly after listening to 666 judging by the numbers…)

Can’t blame anyone for avoiding Biggsy, heard her shreiking at a Woden Plaza fashion show on my way through to JB hifi last week, made the doof doof music in the car audio area sound calming and inviting…

My digital audio player does that too.

Scotty and Nige are absolute torture to listen to. 104’s only saving grace is they play music made in the last 20 years.

Scotty and Nige are terrible, who completes these surveys? The only decent people worth listening to are Hamish and Andy.

Hamish… and that other guy who attempts to keep up in a cringe worthy way.

Anyone notice in the new TV ad for od and Bigzy that she looks (ironically) bigzier than when she first came to Canberra and towards the end of the ad seems to have a balance issue, looking just about drunk?

hahahaa. .. Biggzy DOES look slightly drunk in that ad. And she’s making some kind of weird grimacing expression, like “must attempt to smile while pretending to be sober”. Despite this awful ad, I think she’s a good presenter and has made a positive addition to Canberra morning radio.

In general though, I think I’d rather listen to Fran Kelly or Classic FM than the commercial stations. Too many bad jokes, gimmicks and snickering on 104 and 106.

Little_Green_Bag2:40 pm 04 Apr 12

This is pathetic. Perhaps Today can use the extra ad revenue to send Scotty to Jenny Craig.

Merle,I think the girl is called knuckles, but you wraped up the show perfectly, the thiner angry one goes on rants, while the heavier one and the girl favke laugh.

Is the thinner one the one who does the rants? For some reason I always thought it was the fatter one. I have to confess to rather enjoying their stuff though, creative rudeness always appeals to me.

The thinner one looks like that cartoon character who’s always snickering if someone says anything that could be construed as obscene.

I cannot fathom how anyone can listen to “Rod and Bigsy” without being ill.

I find all fm radio painful to listen to. i would prefer to drive in silence

104.7’s ‘If you missed Scotty and Nige this morning, you missed THIS’ promos always make me so glad I didn’t have to sit through their drivel. One of them, don’t ask me which, thinks he’s funny and the other two awkward fake laugh in the background. In the ‘other two’ I’m including the woman who has been on their show for years and years and yet still somehow doesn’t rate a mention in the name.

How would Elton John’s OSCAR host a party? It’s an inanimate object!

I do begrudgingly admit, however, that I don’t mind Scotty and Nige, despite the horrible music that plays in between their segments. They’re probably the second most subsersive couple on Canberra radio, after John Safran and Father Bob.

No let’s see if they can improve the stupid crap that’s on the air when you drive home – I’m talking FiFi and Jules
