Richardg has sent in some photographs of this morning’s launch of the Scouts ballooning program in Canberra with this note:

Here are some photos from this morning’s launch by Chief Minister Katy Gallagher and ACT Scouts Chief Commissioner Peter Harris.

The project is part of the ACT Centennial celebrations and it is the only Scouts balloon in Australia. The balloon’s colours reflect all the sections of Scouting, from Joeys to Rovers. The aim is not only to train Scouts as pilots, but to teach teamwork as part of the ground crews’ duties.

The frost on the ground says the rest!

Glad to have made your day Poetix – though I think a key element of ‘astroturfing’ is failure to disclose your affiliations, and we think our username (quite deliberately) makes our identity very clear!

Indeed (-:
Usually people who do it have names like John123 or CoC2013. Feel free to use that last one if you feel a bit sneaky in the future.

I fail to see what about this story makes you think of astroturfing.

Astroturfing usually means creating illusion of community support for something through the undisclosed funding of a supposedly neutral organization who then push your agenda for you.

In this story, we have a group openly supporting a well established community organization. Then the funding organization openly states that they were happy with how it’s going?

Pretty hard to see a conspiracy in that.

Very exciting to see this Centenary Community Initiatives Fund project get off the ground (literally … ).
….!

May I just say that it’s lovely when the word ‘astroturf’ becomes so very appropriate, in such a surprising way. A balloon, destined to fly, tethered to the grass, attracting a complimentary comment from the people funding the same. You have made my day, sir or madam.

And I hope the scouts actually get to fly!

Very exciting to see this Centenary Community Initiatives Fund project get off the ground (literally … ). Congratulations to the whole team involved, especially those who braved this beautifully clear but very cold morning to be part of the launch!

We had a lovely chat with Jessie, one of the Scouts completing the training, she’s a great ambassador for the program!
