ScreenACT rudderless as staff jump ship

In a “ScreenACT Special Notice” circulated late Monday, it transpires that two of the three staff in the ACT Government Office of Film, Television and Digital Media have taken voluntary redundancies. One is the Manager, the other is the Admin and Liaison Officer.

Significantly, these two claim to “have put forward our own submission in regard to the continued operation of the office, based on our views on how the office could have been set up to make it a more effective and better resourced proposition for the benefit of the whole industry”.

This news will come as little surprise to some RiotACT commentators, who have dared to ponder the usefulness of this Office in the two years since it was established. The question is, will it – or should it – survive?

‘rumoured’, even 🙂

Bob Pickles. Currently runoured to be holidaying in England. Will he return to a shipwreck?

So…who’s the staff member that hasn’t resigned?

yeah, but that’s artsACT.
Isn’t that part of the problem, that film/video/digimedia funding should have come under the auspices of screenACT?
As to who should get the funding, well that’s another story…

It should not survive.
And if it does, govt needs to remain in control.

A quick glance at the ARTS ACT funding through the film/media stream over the last 5 years will show the perils of having the industry having control of govt funds i.e. a peer assessmment approach to funding.

Funding for locals in this sector should go to content producers (NRS Group and RONIN Films) and to developing young and new filmmakers – not to subsidising local TVC and corporate video companies in making short films that do nothing on the festival circuit.
