Chief Minister Katy Gallagher has made our day with news she’s sending Chlamydia screeners to try and clean up Summernats:

Chief Minister and Minister for Health, Katy Gallagher, said today that the Health Directorate will again offer free Chlamydia screening at this year’s Summernats car festival as part of its broader efforts to stamp out the Sexually Transmissible Infection (STI).

2012 marks the third year that the free screening has been provided at Summernats.

“Chlamydia is the most prevalent STI in Australia and currently affects five per cent of sexually active young people in Canberra alone, and if left untreated can lead to infertility,” the Chief Minister said.

“This screening program aims to increase access to testing and treatment for young people in the Canberra community. Summernats offers a unique opportunity to access a large group of young people in the one location at the one time.

“Offering the testing at events such as Summernats also encourages many people to have a test who might not have otherwise gone to their doctor. It is unobtrusive, confidential and an easy way for people to access clinical staff and health information in relation to their sexual health and wellbeing,” the Chief Minister said.

What other events would benefit from this approach?

You’ve been watching too much Houso’s. Interesting that noone has commented on Foreshore being a “Bogan” activity. Apparently Chlymadia is often “symptomless”, so I think it’s a fantastic idea to offer testing at these events. I read somewhere recently that it’s not only young people who need to be educated and tested for STI’s. Young people have kind of grown up with “free condoms” and open discussions on sexual health, whereas the older generation haven’t. So perhaps Floriade and Senior’s Week and University of the Third Age are all possible venues for this type of testing too.

I think you’ll find (sadly) that despite younger people being thought of as more open & savvy about sex than their elders, recent Australian studies have shown a decrease in the use of condoms among young people and a subsequent increase in STIs in that age group.
http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2011/09/27/3326836.htm … “A University of New South Wales study has uncovered a 17 percent rise in the number of young people diagnosed with Chlamydia in the past twelve months, suggesting that the nation’s youth are failing to heed the safe sex call.
The study also found a further 25 percent rise in the number of 16-25 year olds diagnosed with Gonorrhoea during the same period.”
http://theprojecttv.com.au/going-viral.htm … “The Institute’s Associate Professor David Wilson attributed the rise in STI cases to men failing to practice safe sex by using condoms.
Young heterosexual people were the most likely to be infected with chlamydia, the most common STI in Australia, while men who have sex with men were the most likely to have gonorrhoea.
Young people aged 15 to 29 accounted for 80 per cent of the total cases of chlamydia diagnosed during the year.”
Okay … I’ll be first … IMHO Foreshore HAS become a bogan event (yeah, I know … no one asked me, I’m just sayin … ). Boganism is a broad church these days … they arent all named Wayne and Kylie, they dont all drive bomb-a-dores and chug VB … theyre evolving to encompass doof doof cars and spray tans and some may never have even heard of Cold Chisel or be caught dead sporting a mullet. So yeah, Foreshore has been boganised. But it ain’t got a patch on Boonernats.
Oh & I would say that ‘Shazza’ is a well recognised cultural reference outside of ‘Houso’. I could be wrong … maybe the show predates the 1970s???

I have it on good authority that the Brothel business shows the second biggest increase during Summernats of any type of business.

The biggest increase is in the porn shops which only goes to substantiate the rumour about the attendess of this car festival being a lot of w….ers.

Have a nice day and play the ball, not the man

Probably should be setting up the screenings at all the brothels in town the Summernats patrons will be visiting in the next few days. And before people start tut tutting, it is one of the “industries” that gets a “boost” every year from this event.

…and I am supposed to be pleased about that because ?

Frankly I think this screening needs to stop now. If the specimens I have seen in the last few days are anything to go on, Summernats patrons need to get right out of the gene pool.

Hmmm…so we’re looking for a gig where a lot of up-themselves obnoxious yobs blow in from all over the country to make a lot of noise and fight with each other, pissing off the locals while achieving three fifths of five eighths of SFA?

The opening of Parliament it is then.

Ah – thought you were going to suggest ADFA there for a minute.

Hahaha…gold. 🙂

See I’m in the wrong crowd…I read that as Poitier as in actor and Bahamian Ambassador to Japan, Sir Sydney Poitier….. not Poiter/Poida the colloquial term for Peter!

Sidney. I thought diplomats always got names right.

Maybe I was going for his daughter….

Or it’s a cold dark day in hell before I recognize Bahamas!

Firstly the clap is only symptomless in women, most men have the painfull wee.

Yes we did make fun of Foreshore – look it up

and last – WTF is Houso’s?

Firstly, Chlamydia is not the clap and can be symptomless in both men and women
http://www.shfpact.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=148:chlamydia&catid=76:stis-sexually-transmissible-infections&Itemid=126
Secondly, I was referring to my comment on this thread about foreshore. Really have no inclination to go looking up you making fun of it elsewhere…..
Thirdly, Houso’s is a show on SBS. Sounded like you had been watching it with your reference to “Shazza” Maybe you’re already living the life? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Housos

May I say Merry Syphilis and a Happy Gonorreah to all attending Summernats.

I doubt they would be laughing about peeing in a cup at the summernats – most will be too drunk or stupid to read the sign and assume its drug testing and panic, and the rest will spend the rest of the afternoon drunk on woodstock and then go on to punch on with their best mates or family members because their girlfriend “Shazza” has given them all dicks that burn when they pee.

Haha! I was wondering where is the downside in that for the Bogannats.

Is there some sort of bogan calicivirus that could be administered as well?

Didn’t you know that Bogans have got it over pompous arses in the evolutionary stakes? Their immunity to life’s ups and downs is way up there! While they are busy not taking themselves too seriously, you will be too busy sitting back pointing your finger and procrastinating about living your life “properly”. They will probably pee in a cup and laugh about it, rather than sit around making snide comments about it. Seriously, why such hatred towards a particular group of people? Were you picked on by someone called Poiter at school? Are you jealous because you secretly want to do burn outs and check out boobs? Get yourself a ticket then mate!

I’d be up for that, during the Floriade for 2010 some filthy dirty person was walking around with swine flu. I ended up copping it and the consequential hospital stay thanks to said unclean animal.

How do you know it was then? Very specific.

It was the only time during the period before I was sick where I was around a crowd of people, no one else in my family or work place got sick. While I can’t say with 100% certainty, its highly likely that is where I ended up getting it.

So…because someone in a crowd of people was infected with the flu – and lets face it, they likely didn’t realise it at the time; any time I’ve had a proper flu (swine or otherwise) wandering around admiring flowers was lower on my priority list than curling up in front of a heater and shivering – they’re a dirty animal? Given that logic, you must have been a filthy dirty animal as well.

OK. Ive no idea of the incubation period for that or even much about how its spreads and cant be bothered looking. Seems a harsh call on whoever you got it from though. Doesnt make them an unclean animal surely?

Indeed, it’s more accurate because not all infections lead to diseases.

I first saw this coming into use a few years into this century, but I couldn’t tell you absolutely when it started.

that $10 test was available at Summernats last year too.

Deref said :

BTW – when did STDs become STIs?

When people in the medical profession went for truth rather than clarity.

Diseases have symptoms, signs, and their expression impairs ordinary function.
If you’re merely an unconfirmed infectee, you may be an asymptomatic carrier, happily sharing your infection without noticing\caring (or refusing to believe it because you don’t have symptoms, like Typhoid Mary).

Apparently they did it a Foreshore too. It’s a great initiative.
STD’s imply chronic disease, which I suppose you get if you have an infection that’s left untreated.
Pee in a cup all you Summernatters!
