Just because you’ve seen it before doesn’t mean everyone has seen it before.

That’s the excuse TV networks use for showing repeats of M.A.S.H.

Don’t look at it then you half wit.

On the other hand…
I have this weirdest boner looking at the thumbnail of this photo on the front page.

…Just sayin’.

…Okay, I’ll go excuse myself from this thread.

This is so old we have seen this a million times.

If he wanted a fancy photo of Scrivener he could have found one on the web.

His time would have been better spent getting out to the spillway at Corin Dam. That would have been remarkable, especially with the road closures.

Don’t look at it then you half wit.

Love the photos.

Great shots. Thanks for posting.

Great photo. It looks like the back of the head and the shoulders of a submerged giant, about to stand up. It’s quite frightening to see the power of the water in this way.

Great pics, love them!

doh! you forget that all the other images you will find on the web, are taken by equally as dedicated photographers like Jawm – and I for one have seen nothing like his pics of scrivener.

Encourage these people sharing the beauty of the world!

Cotter is effectively downstream of Queanbeyan. But Googong could be an issue.

Yup, Nothing much to worry about down stream of Cotter (at least for a good distance), but a full Googong and lots of rain is exactly why Shelbyville went under last time.

Unless you need to get home via Uriarra Crossing or Cotter bridge!

No one just woke up one morning and found they lived the other side of the river against their will. If you live out there you kinda have to take that kinda thing as the cost of doing business. Same with all the other low level crossings between Cotter and Burrinjuck. Although I’d be a little more sympathetic if the bridge at the Cotter pumping station got totally washed away…

I didn’t comment on the equipment on/at the dam itself, that would clearly be an issue for ACTEW, was was noted.

I doubt it. Most people don’t think past point and shoot. It takes a bit of knowledge and a tripod to do effective long exposures like this.

Yes. But he wanted to TAKE a fancy photo of Scrivener. It’s one of the better ones I’ve seen. So now it’s on the web where no talent commenters can view it.

Your time would have been better spent doing pretty much anything but critiquing images.

Erm, look at this: http://www.actew.com.au/Our%20Projects/Enlarged%20Cotter%20Dam/DamCam.aspx

It’s not what’s downstream, it’s what at the end of the catchment. That wall is already 8m higher than the original Cotter Dam and ACTEW projections are that water will overtop it! Not flood through the diversion tunnel like last time, but actually wash over the top if rainfall is at the higher end of the predicted range.

If it’s heavy enough then barriers their putting in to keep the trucks and cranes on the top of the wall from being washed away may not work, and then you’ve got a few tons of truck going over.

There was no intention of linking the two – just saying both ACT Catchments are going to overflow, and because of what is at the end of both catchments, a new dam under construction at the Cotter and a town under Googong, both will be significant events. Overflow for Cotter Catchment is normally ho-hum.

Speaking of dams, ACTEW CEO is reporting that they are putting preparations in place to evacuate the new Cotter Dam site.

They’re already moving heaps of equipment off the site.

The equipment that can’t be removed, including many tons of earth moving equipment and barriers on top of the partially constructed wall is being secured as best as they can behind temporary walls. Their hope is that if water does overtop the new dam, they’ll be able to channel it to one side, but if it’s a big enough flow, that stuff is all going under.

He wasn’t mincing words, if the rains do end up at the pointy end of the prediction, the existing Cotter Dam and the Googong Dam won’t be able to mitigate the flows. So it will overtop the new dam, and will cause inundation in Queanbeyan.

Cotter is effectively downstream of Queanbeyan. But Googong could be an issue.

With the long shutter the water looks like solid domes. So much so that…

No one would have believed that in the early years of the 21st century that human affairs where being watched from the timeless worlds of space. No one could have dreamed we were being scrutinised
as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets and yet across the gulf of space minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this Earth with envious eyes and slowly and surely they drew their plans against us.

Dah dah daaaahh, dah dah daaaahh.
(Love that album) (Fixed the American spelling for you.)

@G-Fresh …sure it’s a cliche… I could have found a similar photo on the web… but I’m pleased I managed to snap one myself (I happened to be driving past on my way home, with my camera gear)…

Now my question, What would you use to work out how many fish are going through that stream of water.
