Chief Minister Gallagher has let us know works have commenced to upgrade the much maligned Scullin shops:

“The $1.12 million upgrade of Scullin shops will revitalise the area, providing locals and traders with a safer, more accessible and more attractive local centre,” the Chief Minister said.

“Community feedback in recent years has demonstrated that locals place great value and pride in the amenity of their local shops, and I know that Scullin residents have been keen to see this upgrade commence. The contractor, Pyramid, has now commenced work and is expected to complete the upgrade by June this year.

Features of the upgrade include:

— new lighting to enhance security;
— new street furniture including seats, bins and a community noticeboard;
— landscaping works;
— upgrades to paving and lighting to improve pedestrian access;
— improved stormwater drainage;
— new toilet block; and
— public artwork.

We look forward to seeing the artwork.

Its about time!!!!

Found the steps up to the shops from the carpark – as I go older – a bit demanding.

But when I was young, living in Scullin was good. The shopping centre had everything, including a great motor mechanic at the Total Servo.
Printer, hairdresser, baker, supermarket, the best pharmacy in Belconnen, and I think it had a Post Office too.
All this prior to the opening of Belconnen Mall of course.
Oh, and there were no government flats surrounding the shopping centre.
I welcome the upgrade, well done ACT Government.

What a waste of money. Akin to re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic. The Scullin shops have been a basket case for years now. Only one very poorly stocked “supermarket” and lots of empty shops. The proximity to the far superior Hawker shops pretty well makes Scullin obsolete.

About time – look forward to it. While they’re at it, how about legislation that also stops commercial printers and the like from setting up camp in residential areas…
