Discreetly placed on the first floor of the Belconnen Churches Centre, Eun Sushi is a modest little Japanese sushi store that would be easy to miss.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the Westfield Shopping Centre, it’s a hidden gem.

There’s something magical about stumbling across an understated sushi store within walking distance from your house and falling in love with their variety of sushi, bento and gourmet Japanese food.

Entering the store makes you feel like you have entered a humble family home.

The windows are covered in homemade menus and signs detailing the latest specials and lunch meals. They show photos of bento boxes, noodles, yakisoba and teriyaki chicken.

I can’t help but admire the small framed Japanese artworks hung on the wall alongside the welcoming husband and wife duo behind the counter.

The store is far from an Instagramable Pinterest board, but it is simple and authentic in the best of ways and it delivers the goods. You can tell it is not about ‘aesthetic’ – it is all about the food.

With Canberra’s cold winter weather, being inside this simple store surrounded by a colourful array of sushi and the smell of warm Japanese food can only be described by the Danish word hygge.

Hygge, pronounced ‘hoo-ga’, is the feeling of cosy contentment.

There is a small amount of basic seating both inside and out, which overlooks the highrises along Benjamin Way, but most people seem to come to Eun Sushi for its amazing takeaway.

With so much on offer, I couldn’t go past the delicious range of sushi. They had a wide variety: tuna, beef, teriyaki chicken, katsu chicken, prawn tempura, salmon, fish tempura and vegetarian options. I decided to order the seared salmon sushi with a side of crab claws.

The aroma of sweet crab filled the space. The crab claw was perfectly crunchy on the outside yet soft and fluffy inside. The seared salmon also didn’t disappoint. It was delightfully smoky and fresh.

Together the salmon, seaweed, and glutinous rice made the perfect combination, flavoursome yet not too overpowering.

You could tell that the sushi had been made fresh that day, which made for an ideal lunchtime meal. Coupled with the affordable pricing, Eun Sushi is quite the find!

Eun Sushi is located on the first floor of the Belconnen Churches Centre, at 1F/54 Benjamin Way, Belconnen. They are open Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm, and are closed on weekends and public holidays.
