Secret accountability in the Assembly

The Canberra Times reports on the latest sad and sorry step in the decline of democracy in the ACT.

Simon Corbell’s explanation of what he’s up to in Fyshwick is apparently not fit for public consumption and an estimates committee hearing of the Assembly was taken behind closed doors.

Apparently the developer is unhappy and threatening to sue. The only way to avoid this is to abandon transparency.

Well done Simon.

You have to question the Stanhope Government’s tactics. Why hold a secret (an “in camera”) estimates hearing? You can’t preach openness on the one hand and then carry on like this. Their version of glasnost is looking like it has a lot of qualifications added to it. The Epicentre mess is smelly and Corbell needs to clean it up- not bury it or hope it will go away. Trying to stitch up Snow won’t work. Let’s see some leadership Simon – not endless “weaseling”

From WIN News:

The Opposition claims the Land Development Agency was unclear about the uses of the site when it was put on the market.

It is calling for more documents about the sale.

Corbell releases the valuation on the Epicentre site:

Thanks Simon. but you gotta answer how this in your media release:

“Given the scale of the proposed development, it was prudently assumed that the site would generate a multi-user environment including “major bulky-goods retailers, mini major style retailers and other retailers””.

equates to what is spelt black and white in the Territory Plan?

Oh I see, you have created an “artificial” division of the lease into sub-lots/leases to allow a multitude of shops to occur. Brilliant creative planning! Snowjob will be happy with that.

How unusual – corbell has closed shop and is unaccountable to us, the mere taxpayers.

Bring on election day.

No friend of mr Snow – but this is starting to smell like a pretty lame attempt by Simple Simon to get at a political adversary.

What’s accountability?
