My name is Kylie Robinson and I am undertaking a writing assignment. I am looking for some opinions from Canberra locals about university study in later life. I’m after a couple of quotes from those of you who wouldn’t mind me using your name in my article. If you are a mature aged student or have thought about becoming one, please consider writing to me at threnity@yahoo.com.au – just a few lines describing your views on the subject is all that is needed. If you are more comfortable talking over the phone, please don’t hesitate to let me know at the above email and we can arrange a time. I’ve added some questions here that might help to identify some issues, but please don’t feel that you need to answer all of them!

a) What are your views on being a mature aged university student, if you are one, or mature aged students more generally? Are there major factors that caused you to decide against tertiary study as an older person? Do you feel that university studies are “worth” it, in monetary terms or in terms of the time invested?

b) Do you feel as if there is a timeline or a limit on the amount of study you are prepared to undertake? Are there any limiting factors on what you would be prepared to study?

c) Do you find that there are monetary hardships of full or part time university study as an older person? What about time constraints on family/work/outside interests?

d) How do you feel you fit in with every day campus life and other students?

e) Are there any advantages of being an older student as compared to younger students that stand out to you?

Many thanks in advance,

K Robinson

The government defines mature age students as over-21s. That in my mind isn’t particularly a mature age anyway lol… are you wanting anyone over 21, or some smaller demographic eg working mums in their 30-50s?
