panorama from red hill

(Panorama from Red Hill c1920s, Kingston Power Station in the middle.)

Dug this image up from the Mildenhall Collection, the best known collection of early Canberra.

The problem is with many Govt agencies are that they want property rights over their images in their archives. Good to see that NAA & MOADOPH have put this online.

Even the Canberra District Historical Society just gives you small thumbnails that you cannot magnify. A volunteer society has overheads to meet with limited support.

I believe our history should be free for all to view on line.

In the lead up to the Canberra Centenary everyone should scan historical images and sent them to RiotACT so they are accessible to all.

As the OP said, the National Archives has heaps of great historic photos of Canberra in its collection. Just go to their PhotoSearch database: http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/scripts/PhotoSearchSearch.asp

Not the earliest Canberra images, but try these keyword searches:

“night shopping Canberra” – for some beautiful 1960s shots

“woden offices” – brave new world or what!

Hells bells ,, it tells me there are 7,465 photos to look at. A good project for winter. Tnks for putting it up.
