September foodie adventures

A busy month of food – here is a breakdown of my September foodie adventures.

Brunch
I headed back to C Dine Bar at the Kingston Foreshore to try out the other alternatives on their $25 breakfast prefix menu – this time I chose the fruit salad, and a mushroom omelette. It was lovely sitting outside in the beautiful spring sunshine sipping on my lychee, guava and apple frappe.

Curious to see what Afghani food tasted like, I had a Bedouin breakfast at Koochi Afghan Café in Gungahlin. Loved their green cardamom tea – light, subtle with only a tiny bit of spice and one of their best selling teas. Their lunch/dinner menu looks great, very meaty, and I’m keen to go back and try it.

Walking in to work, I discovered a newly opened café in Phillip called Quizine. Looks like they have a health food mentality with such quotes like, ‘Eat Clean. Train Mean. Live Lean’, and more written up on their wall. Good move particularly with the gym across the road. They do wraps, salads and also have a breakfast menu. For those that need something sweet, not to worry, there are freshly baked muffins, slices and cronuts too!

I was excited to dine at the newly opened A. Baker – an artisan bakery, café, restaurant and speakeasy bar for weekend brunch. A. Baker is set up like a welcoming, open loft-style warehouse, keeping the rather impressive decor of when the building burnt down. Brunch is worth checking out with prices under $16, however I found it hard to get service and we didn’t receive our coffees until after we had all finished our meals. But to be fair, it was their opening weekend.

I tried pumpkin and walnut doughnuts for breakfast at Gryphons Caffe and Bar that also do a good thick potato rosti, had an awesome French toast at 4th Seed in Queanbeyan, and a beautifully smooth coffee at Good Brother.

Lunch/Dinner
The new Morks opened up at the Kingston Foreshore, right next door to C Dine Bar. I ordered some gub glaam (Thai tapas). The lamb and beef tapas were cooked medium well and tasted just superb, even without sauce. I’m keen on trying out their 4 and 8 course degustation menus if it’s anything like what I had back at their old location in Florey. Can’t wait for the other restaurants along the foreshore to open up.

Tried out a fajita at the Beach Burrito Company in Civic. Quite a long wait during the Friday lunch time rush and at $21.95 it’s very pricey (but tasty).

I enjoyed tapas style dishes at Soju Girl on 2.4.1 Tuesday. A varied selection of ‘small plate’ dishes that come out quickly and best of all, its 2 for 1 on Tuesday nights! Loved the Silken Tofu with crispy chickpeas so much we ordered two serves. I liked the funky manga artwork on the wall and awesome soundtrack they were playing too.

I had dinner at The Artisan in Narrabundah, a nice sleek restaurant where I was impressed with their excellent service. I’d love to go back!

I went to A. Baker for dinner where I found their small (entrée) and large (main) plates a tad expensive for the small portion of food, but it’s fresh and tasty.

I also tried out the newly opened Il Portico in Kingston for some yummy simple pizza and pasta. Their short menu will be expanded on in the next few days.

Sweet treats
I went back to Ricardo’s twice last month. 1) to try out the new cronut craze – sweet goodness in a half croissant half donut; and 2) for their delicious high tea. I highly recommend the cakes and pastries there.

I tried one of the best desserts I’ve ever had at Public in Manuka – the peanut butter baklava. It does not look or taste anything like a baklava but is more of a deconstructed snickers bar. Heaven!

I’m all yogurted out – got to pour my own yogurt and choose my toppings at Yogurtland – a self-serve yogurt shop with about 16 flavours and so many toppings to choose from. A novelty treat but fun nonetheless. It just so happened, that the second Noggi Frozen Yogurt store opened up at Westfield Woden last month and I had a taste of that too.

I discovered colourful moon cakes in interesting new flavours to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. I also headed to Knead Patisserie to try their delicious rocky road.

Some other new discoveriesPenny University, a coffee roaster and café due to open in Kingston in November; the French patisserie Croissant D’or set to open in Woden shortly; and the tea store T2 to open in Woden in October.

I’m now gearing up for Canberra’s first Good Food Month in October. See Canberra Good Food Month link to read more about it. Bring it on!

Good stuff – it’s interesting to know about new places. Question, though – are these paid ads or genuine reports?
