The ABC brings word that Andrew Leigh has opened a new government shopfront in Braddon:

The services hub houses Centrelink, Medicare and child support self-service facilities under one roof on Lonsdale Street in Braddon.

Member for Fraser Andrew Leigh says it is a new approach for service delivery.

“The consolidation of Centrelink and Medicare services into single offices has been driven by what customers have been telling us, people having been saying that often they’ll have an issue that covers both Centrelink and Medicare and they don’t want to have to go to two offices for it,” he said.

Where are the ‘customer ‘ car parks? The 200+ stolen cars have to be accommodated.

“Customers”?

What do they buy?

It’s political correctness run amok.

People who use government services are now ‘customers’

Facepalm.

Orwell was right – this is Newspeak.

Maybe – I think they take the definition ‘recipient of a good or a service’ to mean anyone centrelink provided a service to. What will you have centrelink refer to these people have when you are King? Dole bludging Hippies?

That’s not the definition of ‘customer’

customer / n. a person who buys goods or services from a shop or business.

(Source: Australian Oxford Dictionary)

Having said that, I have spent time in a Centrelink office and given how many people turn up and cause trouble, the second definition of customer may be appropriate for some.

2. A person one has to deal with (an awkward customer).

I would suggest ‘client’ is the more appropriate blanket term to apply if they really need one:

client / n. A plebeian under the protection of a patrician; a dependant

Dr Leigh stepping up from envelopes.

And last night on border security, the two folks Immigration were interviewing about working illegally on tourist visas were referred to as ‘clients’

Now I get to hang out with a different circle of people when I get my medicare rebates done. Exciting!

Many years past I queued a few timed in Braddon Centrelink. The clientèle were “colourful” to say the least. I laughed my arse off then the bottleO moved from across the road into the shop next door – I figured it was to cut down on accidents caused by all the customers crossing from one to the other.

Theres been one like that in Gungahlin since I can remember.

Now I get to hang out with a different circle of people when I get my medicare rebates done. Exciting!
