Poor old Mogo took a beating during the recent bushfires and a visit will certainly help lift local spirits. Just off the highway at 2 Tomakin Rd is a cute little retro Viscount caravan from 1963 serving good things like coffee created by friendly baristas from locally roasted beans. Mogo pies, toasties and cup cakes can also be enjoyed on the outdoor seating before a browse through vintage homewares and rusty junk in the adjacent Revamp, Reuse, Upcycle store. Jack and the Beanstore is open every day except Mondays to satisfy your caffeine needs whether you’re hitting the road, visiting from afar, or preparing for a trip to the amazing Mogo Zoo.

Alfresco, Moruya

This café is a bit of a coffee temple. You are surrounded by a huge range of paraphernalia: machines, filters, plungers, presses, drinking vessels, beans and an extensive choice of beans. Our fave is the Black Cyclist blend. It’s strong, sweet, dark and served at the perfect temperature. Alfresco is a lovely space decked out with dark walls that highlight the shiny chrome state-of-the-art equipment, with a view into the roasting room. A big serving window opens out onto the street where locals lean and chat. Last year we asked if this was the best coffee on the coast. Well, it is just my humble opinion, but …

Downward Dog, Bodalla

There feels like movement at Bodalla these days. The pub has just re-opened and things are afoot at Bodalla Dairy, but Downward Dog Co. Café has been doing funky and delicious things for a while. This is a lovely place to stop for coffee from Rush Roasting Co. with its great atmosphere, delightful courtyard and live music sessions. Downward Dog is also licensed for those who want something stronger. Bodalla is a little town with much to stop for, and the coffee and food on offer here are real drawcards. And, might I say, there are LOADS of vegetarian options. Pull up a pew.

A turmeric latte

I have to confess, by the time we arrived at Blue Earth Café in Bodalla we were already well over-caffeinated. However, a seriously delicious turmeric latte really hit the spot and the lovely house-made lemon cake revived us in a less edgy way. It’s a pleasant place to while away some time under the trees behind the café, which is obviously a popular spot with the locals. The lunch menu also looked delicious: gado gado, nourish bowls and raw curries along with loads of vego options. Breakfast is healthy and hearty, and I have it from a good source that the coffee is excellent and, well, it is Montague Coffee. The carrot cake is legendary.

So many coffee blends and so little time! Montague Coffee is a small boutique roastery located by the beautiful turquoise waters of Narooma on the South Coast. You will also find the Montague Coffee van at Moruya Markets most weekends. These guys provide the region with fresh, locally roasted, specialty coffees sourced from around the world. And they do this very well. Popular with travellers (thanks to its convenient location on the coast highway) and locals alike, the lattes and frappes are delicious. You can purchase a range of beans freshly roasted by owner Mark Coppin to take with you and get loads of advice on how to create the perfect cup.

Light and bright with a patio perched over a stunning view, the service here is attentive and efficient. There is something very special about the waters of Narooma – the colour, the clarity, the bounty. You could stare oceanwards over a well-made latte here for hours, or invite friends for a luscious and relaxing lunch, or enjoy tapas on a Friday or Saturday night. My latte is strong and well made with deep caramel notes and the meals being delivered around me from the extensive menu look excellent.

Bound to Earth

Very welcoming with an air of local sustainability, Bound to Earth definitely has the early morning coastal coffee vibe going on. Together with delicious coffee from Moruya’s Alfresco, you can also enjoy seasonal eating with low food miles and minimal packaging. The small daily menu consists of mainly Honorbread goodies, and some house-made buckwheat banana bread and cheese panini. My coffee with soy was absolutely delicious, creamy and strong. A mindful little enterprise.
