It’s state against state, mate against mate, and Origin, Australia’s most-watched event, is back, albeit a bit later than usual.
The game will pit Raiders against Raiders, with Nick Cotric and Jack Wighton lining up for the NSW Blues, and Dunamis Lui and Josh Papalii playing for the Queensland Maroons.
A novel way to show your true colours this year is by getting your hands on an Origin burger from KFC in Nicholls, the only place in the ACT selling the limited edition burgers. They’re available from 3 to 11 November.
If you’re looking to get out of the house, here are seven spots to enjoy the game and make an event of Origin 2020.
As per tradition, all four Canberra Vikings Clubs are showing Origin on the big screens. Entry is free, and if you’re keen to get there early, Happy Hour is on between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm at Chisholm, Erindale, Lanyon and Town Centre.
Magoo’s Cafe and Bar

Canberra’s home of league, the Raiders Club, was always going to make a big deal of the game’s showcase. Celebrate State of Origin 2020 with $4 schooners for the duration of the game.
Another classic venue for footy fans (it won the AHA’s Canberra’s Best Live Sporting Entertainment Venue for 2015 & 2016), The Dock’s $50 package provides a table with views of the big screens as well as live commentary, a meal voucher for $25, two beverage tickets and a promise of “the best Origin atmosphere in Canberra!” Limited seats remain, so bookings are essential.
Bleachers Sports Bar
As the name suggests, Bleachers Sports Bar in the city is another great place to catch the footy. With viewing and sound available from every angle, including the monster 177” screen – you won’t miss a minute of the action. Classic beer towers will also be on offer, as well as all-you-can-eat wings from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm on the day.
Bookings can be made here so that you don’t miss out.
The latest fried chicken joint to set up permanent house in Canberra – Fricken – will be showing all the games on their big screens. Also on offer will be their State of Origin Fricken’ Platter to share with your mates – four beers, four sliders, chicken strips, wings, onion rings and fries – all for $30.
Bookings are essential via 0452 583 745 or through Facebook.
Young & Frisky
For those further up north, another popular fried chicken spot, Young & Frisky in Gungahlin, will be serving up their classic chicken and chilli dipping sauces with a good side of footy for game night.
Bookings can be made online.
Game 2 is on Wednesday, 11 November (Sydney) and game 3 on 18 November (Brisbane). Kick-off for all three games is 8:10 pm.
