The Bureau of Meteorology is heralding the end of the world or at least a really serious storm.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 4:10 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Belconnen, Weston Creek, Coppins Crossing and Casuarina Sands.
These thunderstorms are moving towards the southeast.

They are forecast to affect Canberra Civic, Queanbeyan, Tuggeranong, Canberra Airport, South Canberra and Woden Valley by 4:40 pm and Tharwa, Williamsdale, Royalla and Googong Dam by 5:10 pm.

Large hailstones, very heavy rainfall and flash flooding are likely.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don’t walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 5:10 pm.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Southern Tablelands, Central West Slopes and Plains, South West Slopes, Riverina, Australian Capital Territory and parts of the Central Tablelands, Lower Western, Upper Western and Snowy Mountains districts.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau’s website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

And if you get any interesting photos don’t forget to send them in to images@the-riotact.com

UPDATE: James has sent in this picture of the clouds building up over Civic. Keep them coming!

+1 for pics!!!

Drove by yesterday, nowhere near full. Here’s a pic that the Crimes have put up in their (not so awesome) gallery of pics and looks pretty much like how it was yesterday afternoon:
http://www.canberratimes.com.au/multimedia/18578/156241/

The storm at 3AM was amazing – it seemed like it was directly overhead. And for once the airport rain gauge is actually registering some rain – I was starting to think it was under a tree or something – we always get about twice as much as they claim to. (inner north.)

Well Flemington was blocked this morning. Bus took one hour to get in. And we had 60mm overnight. Bloody lightnight and thunder ensured almost zero sleep…

a work colleague who drives in from Goulburn each day says that it’s not full. he estimated about half full but certainly rising.

Driving past LBG this morning (near Bowen Park) it was amazing to see how much driftwood and gunk was visible on the lake surface. Similarly, just before Mully’s final resting place the creek which runs under Canberra Ave was up very, very high.

Just went for a run past the lake and there is HEAPS of stuff floating around. Huge trees, branches, all sort of stuff. Well worth a look.

Queanbeyan was at a standstill this morning. The radio stations who usually tell you of traffic problems were too busy playing music to tell people what was going on. It took hours to get through (literally).

The high mesh fence around the airport runway has been pushed over by the force of the water coming off the runway, near the last roundabout.

You’re guessing, or it really is? I’d love to see some pics, too.

From a friend’s FB message. He just drove past it this morning.

Took a while to guess where James took the snapshot.

It’s the SAP building at the corner of Akuna and Bunda st. overlooking the city walk.

Am I right??

Correct!

I have kept daily rain readings this year (on the Hall side of Nicholls) and the total as I write is 993mm to 9am 3 Dec -(884 to end Nov). Perhaps readers in ACT or nearby NSW who have kept reliable daily totals through 2010 could share their data here with an approx location.
The two open BoM stations relevant to Canberra long term rain history are Queanbeyan Bowling Club 70072 and Canberra Airport Comparison 70014 – you can download data here.
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/weather-data.shtml
The Airport has had 663.8 to end Nov and Queanbeyan 762.2 – both way lower than our yard – but then we know rain is very variable. Looking on the net for other ACT data there are a few private weather stations online.
Gungahlin
http://www.gungahlinweather.com/index.htm
and Monash which is up with my total.
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~mshaynes/Weather/Current_Monitor.htm
My monthly totals to end Nov are, 13.5, 153, 85, 27.5, 77, 34.5, 83, 89, 85, 94.5, 142.
It would be interesting if a map of 2010 rain isohyets could be produced for the ACT region after what is a notably wet year.

Well, it’s fairly pouring down again outside now. The scared dog has woken me up, but I think morning is going to bring with it some interesting sights. The Queanbeyan river was well up last night at about 9pm.

I heard it was bad in the early hours George. My wife (as well as two soaked dogs and a now feral cat) were awakened by it all.

Just looking at the BOM (and for the life of me I don’t know why I bother) but looks like more nasties are on the way. Looking outside my window into what used to be a nice, landscaped backyard, I can see some hard labour coming my way when things dry out.

As Jethro says, “Just a bit of heavy rain” coming……………….and are we really paying these morons at the BOM? Really?

Just looked at the radar again, and I’d say we’ll be getting very wet again within the next hour.

+1 I’ve heard so many cars drift around the street its sickening.

+ 10… why you would tailgate in wet weather is beyond me.

Oh btw… that wasn’t a storm… it was a bit of heavy rain.

I think there may be a brief pause.

so heavy for so long last night out in Weston creek

We can see our rain gauge from our kitchen window. At it’s heaviest we registered 5mm in around 30 seconds this afternoon, haha, and about 20mm overall. Sullivans Creek is not far away, I didn’t realise it was so full, otherwise I would have gone for a gander.

I’m just SO glad I cleared our leaf choked gutters out the other day. Even though they were clear the was was gushing out the emergency relief holes I drilled at key points. We did the whole ceiling-collapse thing in those big storms in Feb 2007 and really don’t want to go through that again.

creative_canberran9:20 pm 02 Dec 10

Don’t forget, BOM dropped the ball before the Sydney hailstorm because none of them bothered to learn how to read the new Doppler radar images properly. These are not competent nor particularly intelligent people, particularly now when so much is automated and they just spit our statistics crunched by computer models.

Hope no one needs an ambulance in this weather by the way as one of their Merc vans on Tharwa Dr today was driving in a very petrified manner despite only light rain. Heading into the valley, sirens on yet only doing 50 in an 80 zone and dropping to about 10 in the roundabouts. I’d say response times will be triple. Not saying they shouldn’t be cautious, only that people should expect longer times.

Didn’t last long, but my street in Tuggers was a river for 15 minutes there.

Absolutely pelted down in Erindale, yet when I got home in Fadden it had barely rained at all.

Biggest. Joke. Ever.

Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Cloudy. Areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms. Winds northeasterly and light.

City Centre Storms. Rain. Chance of any rainfall:60% Chance of no rainfall:40%

Chance of rain 60%? We pay these jokers?

possibly because the BOM people are in sydney.

my dog looks like a rather large drowned rat. she hates the storms, but her choice of place to hide means she gets wet. She isnt too bright….and she STINKS!

i think i am well and truly over the rain….

I’m with you there.

A river down Burrinjuck Crescent in Duffy around 4.30 this afternoon after the hail storm – but nothing in Dickson at that time.

Drake Brockman Drive in Holt is closed off due to flooding.

Okay – this is the State of Play out North.

I am currently trying desperately to clear drains, save the dogs and stop the roof from caving in. WTF is it with these BOM people that they cancel a warning and, unbelievably, a half hour later we have what is the most severe downpour, including large hail, that I have seen for many, many years.

What the hell is wrong with them that they can’t predict a severe thunderstorm a half hour away when you only had to look up to see there was some nasty stuff about to happen?

Is there anyone out there from the BOM who can explain this? My dogs really need to know!

Just come in from shovelling and sweeping. Lost 10k of OE new electric (driver and passenger)seats rear seats and headlining and carpet for the Series 3, water contaminated 3K head and cams furniture I was making as a christmas present for Mrs wishuwell but worse my late fathers 86 years of observations on life and why he choose Canberra to live his life and raise a family here. But checked on the neighbours and alls good so got off lightly as a communinity I suppose.

Agree with The Frots. Amaroo has just copped a total flogging! It pelted down hard for about 20 minutes and my back yard is now a mini river.

From where I am the BOM service may have been a bit hasty with the withdrawal of the warning! Damn its getting strong out here (north)!

Just got that radar back up in time to save the day…

Wife rang me from Chapman to say that it was severe – and I could see blue sky from here in Belconnen. Just missed the edge of the storm! Last time I saw black on the radar was the massive Melbourne storm that did millions of dollars of damage, about 9-12 months ago.

Whoa! Short but intense in Weston Creek! Very glad the hail stones were small – there was a hell of a lot of them. The back yard is now officially a new wetlands.
