Shane takes up cudgels on the petrol price boards

The Greens’ Shane Rattenbury has introduced a bill to get a straight published price on petrol station price boards:

“The Fair Trading (Fuel Prices) Amendment Bill 2013 will ensure that petrol stations display the fuel price that is available to all consumers and not the price available to consumers who have already shopped with the retailer and have a discount voucher,” said Mr Rattenbury.

“Retailers will be required to display the actual, non-discounted, price of the most popular fuels they sell including diesel and LPG.

“The reforms, recently passed in NSW, will prevent deceptive advertising and ensure that consumers are accurately informed of the actual price of the fuel they want to buy.

“As newer cars need different grades of fuel and different fuel options are being offered, it is important that an accurate price is advertised so consumers can make an informed decision whether or not to pull in.

“This is a sensible step to promote fair competition in the fuel market and ensure that consumers are able to make decisions based on accurate information, as well as better enabling smaller independent retailers to compete with the large chains.

“The new obligations are not onerous and there should not be any difficulty for retailers to comply.

“Given that NSW and South Australia have already taken action on this issue, there is no reason we should delay our response when there is a clear option to deal with the issue that will make us consistent with surrounding NSW,” said Mr Rattenbury.

For a mere Mayor, Shane’s doing a pretty good job as State Premier.

Incredible that it took so long for someone to think to fix this. When we first started getting rubbish quality petrol in our bowsers, the 98 was 6c more expensive than the 95, which was 6c more expensive than the 91.

This lack of advertising is solely responsible from the 12c differential being as much as 30 cents sometimes, and generally up around 24 cents.

Yeah i’m pretty certain putting the non discounted price up rather than the discounted price adds no expense whatsoever. I personally don’t care, i just fill up my car. 5c a litre for my small car is at most a few dollars. And like many who whinge about the cost of petrol, if they gave up coffee/smokes/alcohol, or caught the bus to work they’d save a hell of a lot more then a few dollars a week.

However I find it dishonest to advertise a price that you can only get if you’ve fulfilled some other obligation. Airlines and car dealers now have to display the purchase price, so can’t see why petrol stations shouldn’t.

I’d like to see the premium displayed too – so many makes require it now.

If your car only takes that, you have no choice but to pay whatever the asking price is once you are at the bowser. And the prices for it are often obscenely higher than standard unleaded.

agreed, I hate getting to the pump to find out 98 is 1.75 when 91 is 1.45 (or w/e the going price for the day is is almost always 25-30c more)

In fact that’s the case on the sign in the picture… with “contaminated muck” in small print under the ULP label.

NSW might have taken action, but what he doesn’t realise is that often, the lowest price for ULP displayed is the poison petrol, with the normal stuff a few cents more. You discover that after you’ve pulled in.

Good on ya, Shane, let’s make it genuinely cheaper to run down those vicious kangaroos!

“accurate price is advertised so consumers can make an informed decision whether or not to pull in.”
Is he going to police the size of the text on the boards too? I can see a lot of people deciding at the last minute as they get closer to the board that they don’t want to pay 2c extra and then swerving to avoid pulling in.
