Sharing garden cuttings?

I’m a new gardener, and I’m looking at starting a new garden on a bit of a budget.

Is there a gardeners’ etiquette to the process of sharing cuttings?

Are there enough gardeners using this site that I could put out a request for certain cuttings?

Do you do that?

Or is that considered cheap in gardening circles?

One of the best sites for swaps and sharing is here:

http://gourmetbackyard.com/forum/ which is admistered by some organic savvy locals near Gundaroo.

Canberra Organic Gardener’s (COGS) site also has a blog site that you can post queries about cuttings or plants wanted/swapped etc. They even advertise days for swaps.

http://www.cogs.asn.au/

We have used allclassifieds.com.au to source some cuttings or swaps. There are many willing gardeners in Canberra who would be willing to trade or even give some plants for free.

Both the Canberra Organic Growers Society (COGS) and PermaBlitz ACT are good sources for plants, cuttings, seeds, knowledge, ideas etc. COGS is cheap to join, PermaBlitz is free. Come along to a blitz, meet some people, and plants will come your way.

It sounds like a great idea, but maybe not for Riotact..contact details are a problem for a start. A swap group for people with too many fruit and vegies would be good too – I have more plums and artichokes than any sane person could eat.

One thing is most keen gardeners already have more than enough plants, so swapping might not work out. Cuttings are basically free though. If you can befriend some oldies who are keen gardeners they will give you all sorts of bits and pieces.

School fetes are great for cheap plants, trash and treasure is ok, and Epic farmer[‘s market or hall markets are cheaper than garden shops.

Growing from seed is the cheapest, but it is quite labor intensive.

What sort of plants are you looking for?

I’d also be interested in the answer to this.

Sure. What are you after? What have you got?
