The Bradley Street dining precinct in Woden Town Centre will soon have more takeaway options and an injection of vitality with the planned installation of two shipping container shops on the footpath next to Westfield Woden shopping centre.

A development application says the takeaway shops, aimed at passers-by, will add vibrancy to the western side of Bradley Street in an area dominated by the blank facades of the shopping centre.

The shipping containers will come with collapsible outdoor tables and seating and are to be “designed and crafted to a high standard with a selection of materials and colours to enliven the otherwise dull section of Bradley Street and connect existing ground level shop entrances and restaurants with this modern alfresco dining option”.

They will fit in with and contribute to the existing street character with a combination of restaurants and parking surrounding the site, the DA says.

Designed to be fully removable, the containers will be powered and serviced from Westfield Woden, with screened connections along the awning and dropped down onto their roofs.

Signs including menu boards won’t be illuminated and are exempt from the development application.

Light poles will be removed and relocated to ensure the area is well lit at night and a bench will have to be moved.

Canberra Town Planning lodged the DA for Transport Canberra and City Services, and Westfield owners Scentre Group.
