Shipping containers parked on the road

I can understand when people park their cars in narrow streets or cul-de-sacs that they may obstruct the road a little, meaning anyone driving past has to take a little more care. Although, if it’s a narrow street, most responsible drivers would be driving slower than on a main thoroughfare to make allowances for any parked cars.

However, if I was to hire a shipping container for the purpose of storing something at my property, I think I would make sure the container was actually on my property, or at least on the nature strip and not parked out on the street where it would partially block the road.

Someone has done just that and parked a shipping container on the side of the road on Ross Smith Crescent, just up from the shops in Scullin.

The container is up against the curb, but juts well out into the road, at least half-blocking one lane of the road.
While Ross Smith Crescent is by no means a major arterial road, it does see it’s fair share of traffic (and I must say I’ve witnessed quite a few drivers travelling well above the signposted 60kmp/h) and I’m concerned that the container could cause someone to have an accident.

I’d also be mildly concerned for the owner(s) of the shipping container should someone happen to come unstuck as a result of the container. Would or could they face legal action?

Given the supposed apathy demonstrated by the AFP (if other recent threads are to be believed), is it worthwhile bothering to ask the police? (I thought not, hence the reason I am posting here on RiotACT).

Any legal-eagle RiotACT types care to comment?

Oh no one in scullin can park any thing off the road I live here and getting around my street and the one it runs off is a car dogding effort every day, blind corners are the best.
Why is it that people have driveways that they don’t use???

Is it easier to just park on the road making it dangerous for other drivers already on the look out for kiddies running around?

As the object is partially on the road, I’m quite sure it becomes a Police matter. At the very least though, it is on the kerb which is government land and the rangers will take care of it in that case. Just call it abandoned.

Oops. Bit of a contradiction in my last post! I meant parking on straights of streets is good in my eyes, not on corners.

Call the City Rangers. At last they are finally doing something about “dangerous” illegal parking. Its been nearly 15 years since I last saw the Regulators booking cars for parking less than 5 meters from a corner. I thought they had given up on that. And yet they have been targeting this offence in our Suburb for the past week. If only there were as many Police on the streets, as there are Inspectors, then maybe (given the paper work that follows)Police would start pulling drivers over for not indicating or tailgating. Sorry, went a bit off the topic with my daily Police rant. But seriously, cars/containers parked on streets are a good thing in my eyes. Works on that other gripe of mine, speeding motorists.

At no point did I say this was an “emergency”, so calling 000 wasn’t an option.
I figured I would call CanberraConnect before I posted this, I just thought the topic would illicit a bit of discussion, that’s all.

And I wasn’t bagging anyone (especially not the police), just making a comment about other threads on RiotACT.

And you should know that common sense has no place on RiotACT, so WTF yourself! 😉

WTF?

Why are so many people so keen to bag the hell out of the Police in this town?

Call the Police, call Canberra Connect, just call someone so something can be done about your emergency situation FFS.

Common sense should be sold in the shops so people like you can stop giving panadol a headache.

I was about to suggest the same solution. Considering the ACT gov’t love of putting parking tickets on anything and everything…

They certainly will. Someone once reported my housemate’s unregistered car that was parked out in the street, and the City Rangers demanded that it be moved elsewhere. So I’m sure a shipping container is right out.

Contact Canberra Connect to report this. City Rangers will be able to get something done about it, I bet.
