Simon Corbell has announced that he bypassing the approvals process to let the Brumbies big Griffith real estate deal roll on through:

Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell, today announced the approval of a development proposal to build multi-unit housing on the site of the current Brumbies training facility in Griffith.

“My decision to call-in and approve the proposal for development on the current Brumbies site in Griffith acknowledges the substantial public benefit this project will provide for the broader community,” Mr Corbell said.

“Proposals to redevelop this site have been the subject of extended and detailed public consultation and Legislative Assembly scrutiny.

“In 2012 the Legislative Assembly Standing Committee on Planning, Public Works and Territory and Municipal Services unanimously recommended that Draft Variation 307 proceed to allow medium density residential development on this site, subject to a range of conditions.

“My decision to approve this development ensures that all of the relevant conditions recommended by the Standing Committee are conditions of the approval. These include appropriate flood analysis of the site, parking and traffic management and tree protection.

“In response to the concerns about the scale of the development the number of units was reduced to 131 from the original 134 units proposed.”

“The timely commencement and completion of the proposed development by the Brumbies, will facilitate the Brumbies proposals to relocate their facilities to the University of Canberra (UC) sports hub.

Gosh, a whole 3 apartment reduction!

UPDATE: The University of Canberra is expressing its joy at this development.

What did we expect from Simon “trash Canberra’s character” Corbell, part of the government that sneaked “make Canberra more developer-friendly” into its formal, stated goal and vision for the Canberra Centenary?

So Simple Simon is providing a significant public asset to private enterprise for next to no cost (yes, I understand about CoU charges).

Smacks of what Macdonald was doing in NSW, except Simple seems to have done it legally.

Perhaps some well-informed personage could give us a clue – to the nearest 10k would be helpful – how much the ACT Treasury stands to gain from the totally unexpected development approval for Ra Ra Towers.
