Simon Corbell has announced the passage of the Crimes Legislation Amendment Act 2013:

“These new laws will strengthen laws that protect some of the most vulnerable in our community by banning sexual relationships between young people and those in positions of authority,” Mr Corbell said.

“There is no tolerance in our community for people in positions of authority like teachers, coaches and carers to take advantage of the young and vulnerable members of our community and I am pleased to see that these laws have received the majority support of the Assembly today.

“While the vast majority of adults are great mentors to young Canberrans, it is upon the government to ensure that there are adequate laws in place to protect against the few cases where the position of trust is might be exploited.”

The Crimes Legislation Amendment Act 2013 addresses many issues that have been brought to the government’s attention by key justice stakeholders, including the DPP and the courts, and also provides greater access to justice and protection for sexual offence victims and for victims in violent offence matters.

Mr Corbell said the new laws would also strengthen the Sexual Assault Reform Program to protect vulnerable victims and witnesses when giving evidence in sexual and violent offence matters as well as vulnerable victims providing Victim Impact Statements.

“Sentencing for property and drug offences will also be enhanced with the introduction of an offence for possessing a tablet press and greater clarity will be provided for drug pre-cursor, damage property and affray offences,” he said.

The Act will also better enable the courts to take into account an offender’s engagement with court ordered drug and alcohol assessment at the time of sentencing.

Although I support in principal, there are no specifics. What will actually change? I.e. What is legal now that won’t be under the new proposal? And what penalties will change for which offences.

Back in the seventies at Bundah High there was all sorts of debauchery going on.The PE teacher was having a relationship with a 16 year old and i believe they eventually got married. In addition to that i have it on good authority that one of the female science teachers got up to some extra-curricular activites in the lab with one or two of the students. So no more state sanctioned fun and games, such killjoys that assembly mob!
