Simon says thank you to SES members

Thumper 19 July 2007 5

Wednesday night I attended a thank you ceremony for SES volunteers who went to Newcastle and the Hunter to help with the evacuations, flooding and severe storm damage that recently occured in that region.

Minister Corbell gave a short speech thanking the volunteers and emphasising the fact that, for such a small place, canberra can be proud to be able to put together such a task force in such a short time. he also commented upon the professionalism, enthusiasm and dedication of members who often worked 10-12 hour shifts in trying conditions.

Tony Castle reiterrated this.

After the short speeches the crews were able to partake of nibblies and beers, etc, while Mr Corbell circulated and spoke with everyone. I must say his interest was genuine. Photographs were taken and all had a good time.

From the volunteers, who get precious little recognition, I would have say that we appreciate this small gesture.

Oh and I should have added, that it was good to see the article and piccie in today’s Canberra Times – even better that they didn’t use the pic of me!!

I too attended the function, and thought that it was a nice recognition for my SES colleagues. The reception was only for the taskforce members, but we shouldn’t forget that in the past year not only were we able to send the 5 taskforces to Newcastle for 14 days of operations, we also completed 1500 or so other jobs around the Canberra area.

There has been some turmoil in the service lately (ESA Restructure, Firelink, new Commissioner, protests etc…) but it is very pleasing to see that the members of the SES have not let that hinder us in our endeavours to do our job.

It would have to be a RFS uniform as he is not SES and that would not go down well even if he was patting everyone on the back for a job well done.
